Remnants F.C.
Remnants F.C. was an English association football club, made up of masters from Imperial Service College, St Mark's School in Windsor, Berkshire, Windsor. History The club's first reported match was its first-ever FA Cup tie, against Acton F.C., St Stephens of Westminster. Although a new club, many of the Remnants players had played for Windsor Home Park F.C. and St Mark's F.C. (Windsor), the St Mark's side in the previous season. The club competed in the FA Cup in the 1870s. Its most successful run in the competition came in its first entry, in 1877–78 FA Cup, 1877–78, when it won two ties for the only time; in the first round it beat St Stephen's F.C., St Stephen's 4–0 at home, all of the goals coming in the first half, and the first goal being scored after the Remnants had twice put the ball through the goal - one being disallowed as a free kick from Charles Hawtrey had gone straight into the goal (the law at the time making all free-kicks indirect) and the second for ... Charles Hawtrey (actor, Born 1858)
Sir Charles Henry Hawtrey (21 September 1858 – 30 July 1923) was an English actor, director, producer and manager. He pursued a successful career as an actor-manager, specialising in debonair, often disreputable, parts in popular comedies. He occasionally played in Sheridan and other classics, but was generally associated with new works by writers including Oscar Wilde and Somerset Maugham. Born to a long-established county family, Hawtrey was one of three of his parents' five sons to pursue a theatrical career. Before going on the stage he had considered joining the army, but failed to apply himself to the necessary studies to qualify for a commission. Once established as an actor he quickly took on the additional role of a manager, boosted by an early success with his own adaptation of a German farce presented in London as ''The Private Secretary'', which made his fortune. Edward Hagarty Parry (24 April 1855 – 19 July 1931) was a footballer. Born in Canada, he played for the England national team. Early life Born in Toronto, Ontario, where his father served as a clergyman, Parry attended Charterhouse School from 1868 to 1874, and Exeter College, Oxford, where he graduated as B.A. in 1878 and M.A. in 1885. Football career Parry played three times for England, against Wales in 1879 and 1882 and Scotland in 1882. He scored once. He was captain (and goal-scorer) of the Old Carthusians team which won the 1881 FA Cup Final defeating Old Etonians 3–0. He was the first overseas-born captain of an FA Cup winning team, and the last until Irishman Johnny Carey with Manchester United in 1948 (and not Eric Cantona 48 years later). John Hawtrey
John Purvis Hawtrey (19 July 1850 – 17 August 1925) was an English amateur footballer who earned two caps for the national team in 1881 playing as a goalkeeper. Career His football career started with Remnants F.C. and he later played for Old Etonians, with whom he won the FA Cup in 1879. The Berks & Bucks FA County Senior Cup is the Senior County Cup competition of the Berks & Bucks FA. History The competition first took place in 1878–79 – a time when the FA Cup had only been going for seven years, there was no Football League, and most countries in the world did not have any football competitions at all. Originally known as the ''Berks & Bucks Challenge Cup'', Reading was the inaugural winner, defeating Marlow 1–0 in the final held at the Reading Cricket Ground. The trophy was shared in its second season; after Swifts and Old Philberdians drew twice in the final, the association ruled that both clubs were joint holders. The competition mainly consists of non-league teams.
