Barbara Remington
Barbara Remington (23 June 1929 – 23 January 2020) was an American artist and illustrator. Born in Minnesota, she was probably best known for her cover-art for Ballantine Books' first paperback editions of J. R. R. Tolkien's novels ''The Hobbit'' and ''The Lord of the Rings'' and for her Tolkien-related poster '' A Map of Middle-earth''. Career Remington's covers for the three books were designed as one large painting with three sections. In an interview about her association with Tolkien's works, Remington mentions that she had not been able to get hold of the books before making the illustration, and had only a sketchy idea from friends what they were about. Tolkien, the author, could not understand why her illustration included what he thought were pumpkins in a tree, or why a lion appeared at all (the lions were removed from the cover of later editions). William Remington
William Walter Remington (1917–1954) was an American economist who was employed in various United States government positions. His career was interrupted by accusations of Communist espionage made by Elizabeth Bentley, a Soviet spy and defector. Remington was tried twice and convicted twice. The first conviction was set aside on legal grounds, but the second conviction, in 1953 on two counts of perjury, was upheld. He was sentenced to three years in federal prison. Philo Remington (October 31, 1816 – April 4, 1889) was an American businessman. He was the eldest son of Eliphalet Remington, the founder of Remington Arms. Early life Philo Remington was born on October 31, 1816, in Litchfield, New York, U.S. He was the eldest of five children, born to Abigail (née Paddock) and Eliphalet Remington. Eliphalet Remington (October 28, 1793 – August 12, 1861) was an American engineer who founded what would become known as Remington Arms. Originally the company was known as ''E. Remington'' followed by ''E. Remington & Son'' and then ''E. Remington and Sons''. Early years Eliphalet Remington II was born in 1793 in the town of Suffield, Connecticut. He was the second child of four surviving children (but the only son) of Elizabeth (née Kilbourn) and Eliphalet Remington, whose family origins lay in Yorkshire, England. Charles Lee Remington (January 19, 1922 – May 31, 2007) was an American entomologist known for studies of butterflies and moths, a Yale University professor, and is considered the father of modern lepidoptery. He established a Periodical Cicada preserve in Hamden, Connecticut. He developed the insect collection at the Peabody Museum of Natural History. William Procter Remington (March 13, 1879 – December 19, 1963) was an American track and field athlete who competed at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. He was also a prelate of the Episcopal Church. Early life and education Remington was born on March 13, 1879, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph Price Remington and Elizabeth Baily Collins. He is a descendant of John Remington, who emigrated from England to Salem, New Jersey. He was educated at the DeLancey School in Philadelphia and later graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1900. He then embarked on his athletic career. Phil Remington (January 22, 1921 – February 9, 2013) was an American motorsports engineer. Early life Remington was born in Santa Monica, California and was a pre-engineering student at Santa Monica Junior College. He initially was a component inspector at Northrop Aircraft. He joined the United States Army Air Forces during World War II by lying about his age because he was too young and by memorizing the vision charts because he was color blind. He served as a flight engineer on B-24 Liberators.
