Reiss is a surname of Old German origin, and was most commonly used by Ashkenazic Jewish people as a metonymic occupational name for a dealer in rice (''Yiddish'' רײַז), or as an ornamental name from the Old High German word ''Reis'' ‘twig,’ ‘branch.’ Reiss (often written with the German letter ß (or ''sharp-s'') is mostly originated in Austria and South Germany. The south German or Austrian Reiss is a leftover of a profession name Reußhäusler which could best be translated to ''maker of charcoal from wood'' in English. Members of this profession usually have been free residents (in the meaning of not enslaved and not belonging to a Duke or King) and got very early the right to carry a weapon (axe) and a uniform like dress, comparable to miners. Several Jewish sources for the surname Reiss stem from the German state of Hessen (Frankfurt am Main). Albert Reiss also ''Albert Reiß'' (22 February 1870 – 19 June 1940) was a German operatic tenor who had a prolific career in Europe and the United States. He spent much of his career performing at the Metropolitan Opera where he sang in more than 1,000 performances, including several premieres, between 1901 and 1919. Canon Robert Paul "Bob" Reiss (20 January 1943 – 26 January 2023) was an Anglican priest and author. Biography Bob Reiss was born on 20 January 1943. His parents, Paul Reiss and Beryl née Bryant, were not church attendees. He was educated at Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School, where took A levels in maths, physics and chemistry, whilst teaching himself A-level divinity. He was confirmed in the Church of England at the age of 17. Reiss studied Theology at Trinity College, Cambridge before training for ordination at Westcott House, Cambridge. He became a deacon in 1969, and priest in 1970. He served as curate at St John's Wood, London, until 1973. He then spent six months at Rajshahi, Bangladesh as an assistant missioner. Berit Reiss-Andersen (born 11 July 1954) is a Norwegian lawyer, author and former politician for the Norwegian Labour Party. Rodolphe Archibald Reiss (8 July 1875 – 7 August 1929) was a German–Swiss criminology-pioneer, forensic scientist, professor and writer. Early life and studies The Reiss family was in agriculture and winemaking. Anya Reiss (born 27 November 1991) is a British playwright and screenwriter. Career The youngest writer to have a play staged in London, a graduate of the Royal Court's Young Writers Programme, when she was 17 years old, she had her first play ''Spur of the Moment'' staged there in the Upstairs Jerwood Theatre in July 2010, directed by Jeremy Herrin.
