Regret (horse)
Regret (April 2, 1912 – April 11, 1934) was a famous American thoroughbred racemare and the first of three female horses to ever win the Kentucky Derby. Background She was foaled at Harry Payne Whitney's Brookdale Farm in Lincroft, New Jersey. The filly was sired by Broomstick, the 1913-1915 leading sire inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame (son of Ben Brush, also inducted into the Hall of Fame). She was out of Jersey Lightning, who goes back to Longfellow through his Kentucky Derby-winning son, Riley. Regret was bred by owner Harry Payne Whitney. Racing career Trained by James G. Rowe, Sr., in 1914 Regret became the first of only four horses to ever win all three Saratoga Race Course events for two-year-olds: the Saratoga Special Stakes, Sanford Stakes and Hopeful Stakes. Broomstick (horse)
Broomstick (1901–1931) was a Thoroughbred race horse whose most important win was in the 1904 Travers Stakes. After retirement, he became one of the great sires in United States, American racing history, Leading sire in North America, leading the North American sire list in 1913, 1914 and 1915. He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1956. Background The important horseman, James R. Keene (who owned Domino (horse), Domino, Kingston (horse), Kingston, Colin (horse), Colin and Sysonby among so many other memorable horses), also owned Elf, Broomstick's dam. He bred her to leading sire Ben Brush, but believing she was barren, he sold her to Milton Young, One year later she foaled Broomstick at the famous McGrathiana Stud in Kentucky. Dehere
Dehere (April 13, 1991 - c. May 16, 2014) was an American Champion Thoroughbred racehorse. He was bred and raced by Robert E. Brennan's Due Process Stable. Sired by Canadian Hall of Fame inductee and two-time North American Champion sire, Deputy Minister, he was out of the mare Sister Dot, a daughter of the U.S. Triple Crown champion Secretariat. Racing at age two in 1993, Dehere joined Regret (1914), Campfire (1916), and City Zip (2000) as the only horses to ever win all three Saratoga Race Course events for two-year-olds: the Saratoga Special Stakes, Sanford Stakes and Hopeful Stakes. Dehere's other major victory in 1993 came in the Grade I Champagne Stakes. He went into the Breeders' Cup Juvenile having won five of his six starts. Campfire (horse)
Campfire (1914–1932) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Bred and raced by the co-owner and president of Saratoga Race Course, Richard T. Wilson, Jr., he was sired by Wilson's Olambala, a multiple winner of important races including the Latonia Derby and Suburban Handicap who also sired several top runners including the multiple Handicap winner Sunfire and 1922 Belmont and Preakness Stakes winner Pillory. Campfire was conditioned for racing by future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame trainer T. J. Healey. Hopeful Stakes
The Hopeful Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. Open to two-year-old horses, the Hopeful is the first Grade I stakes for two-year-olds each season and historically has been a showcase for some of the top East Coast horses at that age group. Raced on the dirt over a distance of seven furlongs, the Grade I event currently offers a purse of $350,000. Saratoga Race Course
Saratoga Race Course is a Thoroughbred horse racing track located on Union Avenue in Saratoga Springs, New York, Saratoga Springs, New York (state), New York, United States. Opened in 1863, it is often considered to be the oldest major sporting venue of any kind in the country, but is actually the fourth oldest racetrack in the US (after 3rd oldest Pleasanton Fairgrounds Racetrack, 2nd oldest Fair Grounds Race Course, and oldest Freehold Raceway). Longfellow (1867–1893) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Background Longfellow was owned, bred, and trained by "Uncle" John Harper of Nantura Stock Farm in Midway, Kentucky. Harper was worth perhaps a million dollars (a very great sum in the 1850s), yet he lived in a simple cottage on his 1,000 acres (4 km²) adjacent to Robert A. Alexander's famed Woodburn Stud in Woodford County, Kentucky. In 1856, Harper stood both Lexington and Glencoe, two of the country's greatest stallions. Brookdale Farm is a former Thoroughbred breeding and training farm located at 805 Newman Springs Road in the Lincroft section of Middletown Township in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Thomas Lloyd acquired the property in the late 18th century. In 1872, David Dunham Withers established the horse breeding and training operation. By 1889, the farm included .
