Regional Studies Association
The Regional Studies Association is a learned society with an international network of academics, policy makers and practitioner members. It was founded in 1965, following the foundation of the Regional Science Association in the USA and International Centre for Regional Planning and Development in the UK. Regional studies (sometimes called area studies in the USA) is a field of interdisciplinary research focusing on the sub-national, such as city and regional development, urbanisation, economic inequalities and migration issues. Walter Isard
Walter Isard (April 19, 1919 – November 6, 2010) was a prominent American economist, the principal founder of the discipline of regional science, as well as one of the main founders of the discipline of peace studies and Peace economics. Life and contributions Born on April 19, 1919, in Philadelphia, the son of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Isard graduated with honors at the age of 20 from Temple University, in 1939. He next went to Harvard University, studying under Alvin Hansen and Abbott Usher. There, he developed a research interest in building construction, transportation development, the location of economic activities, and the ensuing cycles of growth and stagnation that characterized the 1920–1940 period. In 1941–42, he studied at the University of Chicago, where his interest in mathematics was rekindled.
