Region Kalmar County () formerly Kalmar County Council (), is the regional council for Kalmar County, Sweden. Region Kalmar County is responsible, primarily for healthcare and dental care. In addition to this, the region also has responsibility for regional development within the county. The region is also responsible for public transport between the county's municipalities and is involved in cultural activities. Region Kalmar County was formed on 1 January 2019 through the reorganisation of the County Council of Kalmar County and a merger with the Kalmar County Regional Federation. History Before the County Council of Kalmar County, between 1864 and 1970, the county was divided into two county councils, Northern Kalmar County Council and Southern Kalmar County Council, with Västervik and Kalmar as their respective seats. Kalmar County () is a Counties of Sweden, county or ''län'' in southern Sweden. It borders the counties of Kronoberg County, Kronoberg, Jönköping County, Jönköping, Blekinge County, Blekinge and Östergötland County, Östergötland. To the east in the Baltic Sea is the island Gotland County, Gotland. The counties are mainly administrative units. Geographically Kalmar County covers the eastern part in the Småland province, and the entire island of Öland. Culture Much of Öland's present day landscape known as the Stora Alvaret has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This southern part of Öland is known for a large number of rare species; early Paleolithic settlement at Alby, Öland, Alby; other prehistoric remains such as the Gettlinge Gravefield and Eketorp Fortress; and the Ottenby Nature Preserve.
