Reginald Frederick Chapman
Reginald Frederick Chapman (2 July 1930 – 2 May 2003) was an English entomologist who later worked at the University of Arizona. He wrote a landmark textbook on the anatomy and physiology of insects, ''The Insects- Structure and Function'', several editions of which have been published. Chapman was born in London and received a bachelor's degree in science from Queen Mary College, London in 1951. After a Ph.D. at Birkbeck College, he joined in 1953, the locust control service in East Africa and from 1957 he worked at the University of Ghana, studying tsetse flies. In 1959 he returned to Birkbeck to teach zoology. In 1969 he published ''The Insects- Structure and Function'' which was to go into numerous editions. Entomology
Entomology () is the scientific study of insects, a branch of zoology. In the past the term "insect" was less specific, and historically the definition of entomology would also include the study of animals in other arthropod groups, such as arachnids, myriapods, and crustaceans. This wider meaning may still be encountered in informal use. Like several of the other fields that are categorized within zoology, entomology is a taxon-based category; any form of scientific study in which there is a focus on insect-related inquiries is, by definition, entomology. Tsetse Fly
Tsetse ( , or ) (sometimes spelled tzetze; also known as tik-tik flies), are large, biting flies that inhabit much of tropical Africa. Tsetse flies include all the species in the genus ''Glossina'', which are placed in their own family, Glossinidae. The tsetse are obligate parasites, which live by feeding on the blood of vertebrate animals. Tsetse have been extensively studied, because of their role in transmitting disease. They have a prominent economic impact in sub-Saharan Africa, as the biological vectors of trypanosomes, causing human and animal trypanosomiasis. Tsetse are multivoltine and long-lived, typically producing about four broods per year, with up to 31 broods over their lifespans. Anti-Locust Research Centre
The Anti-Locust Research Centre (ALRC) was set up in London, United Kingdom, by the Colonial Office in 1945, with the aim of improving the worldwide forecasting and control of locusts. The Russian-British entomologist Boris Uvarov was appointed as its first director. Prior to that, Uvarov had been in charge of a small locust research unit in London, formed in the 1920s within the Imperial Bureau of Entomology. The unit later became known as the Centre for Overseas Pest Research. During World War II, the ALRC concentrated on its forecasting and advisory services with regard to anti-locust campaigns in the Middle East and Africa. After the war it became a dedicated research centre on locusts, making important contributions in the areas of taxonomy, population biology and locust control. Elizabeth A. Bernays (1940 – 5 March 2024) was an Australian entomologist who was a Regents Professor at the University of Arizona. She was known for studies of physiological, behavioural, and ecological interactions between plants, herbivorous insects and their predators. Bernays worked on the feeding behaviour of a variety of insects including aphids, grasshoppers, and hawkmoths. She was known for championing the idea that predation drove many insects to specialise on a few species of hostplants, rather than specialisation being solely the outcome of a chemical arms race between plant and insect herbivores.
