Refried Ectoplasm
''Refried Ectoplasm (Switched On Volume 2)'', released in July 1995, is a compilation by Stereolab of singles and rarities. Reception The ''Rolling Stone Album Guide'' referred to ''Refried Ectoplasm'' as "offer[ing] some of Stereolab's most Experimental music, experimental material, and occasionally—as with ''Refried''s early singles ('Lo Boob Oscillator')—some of the group's more accessible tracks as well." Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic gave the album a 4.5 out of five rating, stating that the album is "far more than a mere oddities collection. More than any other album, ''Refried Ectoplasm'' charts Stereolab's astonishing musical growth between those three years, and offers several definitive songs – including 'Lo Boob Oscillator', 'French Disko', and 'John Cage Bubblegum'." Stereolab
Stereolab are an English people, Anglo-French avant-pop band formed in London in 1990. Led by the songwriting team of Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier, the group's sound incorporates repetitive motorik beats with the use of vintage electronic keyboards and female vocals sung in English and French, drawing influences from krautrock, funk, jazz, 1960s Yé-yé, French pop and Brazilian music. Their lyrics have political and philosophical themes influenced by the Surrealist and Situationist International, Situationist art movements. Stereolab were formed by Gane (guitar and keyboards) and Sadier (vocals, keyboards and guitar) after the break-up of McCarthy (band), McCarthy. The two were romantically involved for fourteen years and are the group's only consistent members. Pete Kember
Peter Kember (born 19 November 1965), also known by his stage name Sonic Boom, is an English singer-songwriter, composer and record producer. He was a founding member, vocalist, guitarist and keyboardist of neo-psychedelic band Spacemen 3, lasting from 1982 until the band's dissolution in 1991. He is now based in Sintra, Portugal. Kember has also led the musical projects Spectrum and E.A.R. (Experimental Audio Research), sometimes as the only member. He has played and collaborated with a number of artists, including Stereolab, Panda Bear, Yo La Tengo, and Sinner DC. He contributed production work on MGMT's second album ''Congratulations'', Panda Bear's's albums ''Tomboy'' and ''Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper'', and Beach House's album '' 7''. Crumb Duck
''Crumb Duck'' is the first collaboration between Anglo-French indie band Stereolab and cult avant-garde unit Nurse With Wound, first released on 10" vinyl on the Clawfist label in 1993. Stereolab guitarist Tim Gane detailed the circumstances surrounding this collaboration to ''The Wire'' in 1997 (issue 164) whilst undertaking the magazine's "Invisible Jukebox" feature (alongside Lætitia Sadier). Gane stated that he had invited sole permanent NWW member Steven Stapleton to produce Stereolab's debut album (later released as ''Peng!''). However, Gane stated that Stapleton had refused on the grounds that the group were "too rock" but had agreed to undertake a remix for the group instead. Stapleton surprised Gane by producing a letter he had written to NWW some years previously, which he had marked as the 15th piece of correspondence he had received regarding his group (also ''The Wire'', issue 164). Huggy Bear were an English riot grrrl band, formed in 1991 and based in Brighton; active for three years, they played their final gig in December 1994. History Evolving in tandem with the Olympia, Washington-based riot grrrl movement led by feminist bands such as Bikini Kill, Huggy Bear called themselves "girl-boy revolutionaries", both in reference to their political philosophy and the gender makeup of their band. Unrest (band)
Unrest was an indie rock band from the Washington, D.C., area. It was one of Mark Robinson's projects for what would eventually become the TeenBeat label, also created by Robinson while in high school. Developing from an experimental approach of never playing the same song twice, earlier material seemed to be influenced by everything from punk to funk to Ennio Morricone. Original members Robinson (guitar) and drummer Philip Krauth were joined by Bridget Cross on bass in 1990 and their sound evolved into a minimalist but lively kind of pop. The two full-length albums released with this line up, 1992's '' Imperial f.f.r.r.'' and 1993's '' Perfect Teeth'' (distributed by the influential British label 4AD Records) featured pop songs interspersed with avant-garde percussive and sonic tracks, sometimes featuring nothing but white noise, beeps or sirens.
