1997 Slovak Referendum
A referendum was held in Slovakia on 23 May and 24 May 1997. Voters in Slovakia were asked four separate questions: on whether the country should join NATO, whether nuclear weapons should be allowed in Slovakia, whether foreign military bases should be allowed in Slovakia, and whether the President should be elected directly. The government left the last question off the ballot paper, leading to both referendums failing to meet the legally required turnout threshold. Questions The first question, on joining NATO, was government-sponsored. It was hypothetical as, under Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar, Slovakia had progressively become a pariah state, and NATO were unlikely to issue an invitation. The second and third questions were related to the first, with the questions deliberately expressed in a manner that deterred 'yes' voters. :''Are you in favour of Slovakia's entry into NATO?'' :''Are you for placing nuclear weapons on the territory of Slovakia?'' :''Are you for loca ... 2010 Slovak Political Reform Referendum
A referendum on political reform was held in Slovakia on 18 September 2010, following a successful petition started as a civil activity along with foundation of the radical neo-liberal Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), which later became the third-largest party in the National Council. 401,126 signatures were collected, with 386,000 found valid. Large majorities voted in favour of all six proposals, with between 70% and 95% supporting each proposal. A referendum on banning same-sex marriage was held in Slovakia on 7 February 2015. The referendum was not valid as the turnout did not reach the required threshold of 50%, with only 21.4% of citizens casting a vote. Background In June 2014, the Slovakia National Council amended the country's constitution to specifically deny same sex couples the legal protections associated with marriage. The referendum was initiated after the conservative church backed group Alliance for Family gathered 400,000 signatures calling for a vote on the law. The Conference of Slovak Bishops, which organises anti-abortion and anti-euthanasia rallies overwhelmingly supported the move. Questions Voters were asked questions on three issues: [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
