Reefton Hospital
Reefton Hospital is a hospital in Reefton on the West Coast of New Zealand. It was founded in 1872 and its closure was announced in 2024. History Reefton Hospital was established in 1872 and still stands on its original site in Broadway, Reefton. In 1872 Reefton had at least eight doctors including Dr Joseph Lee. Lee was a surgeon who had set up his practice to treat the victims of mining accidents, and other patients. The community had begun efforts to improve the provision of health care in 1871 by forming a Sickness and Medical Aid Society. This was followed by a public meeting in 1872 at which it was decided to raise the necessary funds to build a hospital. Dr Lee was qualified to become the hospital's superintendent but the Hospital Committee appointed Dr Thomas Sanderson Bulmer of Wellington to the position. Reefton is a small town in the West Coast, New Zealand, West Coast region of New Zealand, approximately northeast of Greymouth, New Zealand, Greymouth, in the Inangahua River valley. Ahaura is south-west of Reefton, Inangahua Junction is to the north, Maruia is to the east, and the Lewis Pass is to the south-east. In 1888, it was the first town in New Zealand to be lit by electricity, generated by the Reefton Power Station. Reefton was a thriving gold mining town in the late 19th century, and gold mining lasted from the 1870s to the 1950s. Its economy is based on tourism, forestry, coal mining, and farming. Reefton is home to the Inangahua County Library. Name The rich veins of gold found in a quartz reef near the town led to its name, originally spelled "Reef Town". Mabel Howard
Mabel Bowden Howard (18 April 1894 – 23 June 1972) was a well-known New Zealand trade unionist and politician. She was the first woman secretary of a predominantly male union (the Canterbury General Labourers' Union). She was a Member of Parliament for the New Zealand Labour Party, Labour Party from 1943 until 1969. In 1947 she became New Zealand's first woman cabinet minister when she was made Minister of Health and Minister in charge of Child Welfare. 1929 Murchison Earthquake
The 1929 Murchison earthquake occurred at 10:17 am on 17 June. It struck the Murchison region of the South Island, with an estimated magnitude of 7.3, and was felt throughout New Zealand. There were 17 deaths, mostly as a result of landslides triggered by the earthquake. The rumbling sound of the earthquake was loud enough to be heard at New Plymouth, more than 250 km (155 mi) away. Tectonic setting New Zealand sits astride the boundary between the Indo-Australian plate and the Pacific plate. Jane Preshaw
Jane Preshaw (née Norgate; 30 May 1839 – 12 December 1926) was a New Zealand nurse, midwife and hospital matron of Reefton Hospital. Biography Preshaw was born in Little Plumstead, Norfolk, England, in 1839. She emigrated to Melbourne, Australia in 1856, at age 17, where she became a general servant and later a domestic nurse and midwife. During her time in Melbourne she gave birth to her daughter Alice in January 1860. She was not married Alice's father, Henry Smith and registered her daughter as Alice Gotrow. Jane later married David Gerald McCarthy who also went by the name Timothy O'Brien. Jane then married bigamously Martin Pitersen (Peterson) just before she left for New Zealand. In about 1868 Jane O'Brien and Alice left Melbourne for Hokitika, New Zealand, and later settled in Reefton.
