Redmond Gallagher
Redmond Gallagher (27 February 1914, County Donegal – 31 October 2006, Sagra, Alicante) was an Irish businessman and racing driver. He was chairman of Urney confectionary company and a noted motorsport enthusiast. Biography Early life Redmond Gallagher was born on 27 February 1914 at Dunwiley House, Stranorlar, County Donegal. His father was Henry Thomas Gallagher, founder of Urney Chocolates, while his mother, Eileen Gallagher, was a pioneering Irish businesswoman and relative of prominent nationalist John Redmond. He was educated at Belvedere College, Dublin, where he was rugby captain. He wanted to become an engineer, but at his father's behest joined the family business of Urney instead, although he did also work as a steward at the Irish Grand Prix. In 1934, Gallagher travelled to Germany for work and at the Leipzig industrial fair was introduced to Adolf Hitler as he was doing the rounds. Leprechaun
A leprechaun ( ga, leipreachán/luchorpán) is a diminutive supernatural being in Irish folklore, classed by some as a type of solitary fairy. They are usually depicted as little bearded men, wearing a coat and hat, who partake in mischief. In later times, they have been depicted as shoe-makers who have a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Leprechaun-like creatures rarely appear in Irish mythology and only became prominent in later folklore. Etymology The Anglo-Irish (Hiberno-English) word ''leprechaun'' is descended from Old Irish ''luchorpán or lupracán'', via various ( Middle Irish) forms such as ''luchrapán, lupraccán'', (or var. The Curragh
The Curragh ( ; ga, An Currach ) is a flat open plain of almost of common land in County Kildare. This area is well known for Irish horse breeding and training. The Irish National Stud is located on the edge of Kildare town, beside the famous Japanese Gardens. Also located here is Pollardstown Fen, the largest fen in Ireland. This area is of particular interest to botanists and ecologists because of the numerous bird species that nest and visit there. There are also many rare plants that grow there. It is composed of a sandy soil formed after an esker deposited a sand load and as a result, it has excellent drainage characteristics. This makes it a popular location for training racehorses. 1954 RAC Tourist Trophy
The 1954 RAC Tourist Trophy was a motor race for Sports Cars which took place on 11 September 1954 on the roads around Dundrod, (County Antrim, Northern Ireland). It was the 21st RAC Tourist Trophy and the fifth race of the 1954 World Sportscar Championship. The Tourist Trophy was awarded to handicap winners Paul Armagnac and Gérard Laureau driving a D.B. HBR Panhard however the overall race win for championship points was attained by Mike Hawthorn and Maurice Trintignant driving a Ferrari 750 Monza. Going into the race, Ferrari was leading the World Sportscar Championship by eight points from Lancia. Victory by the Italian marque gave it the title for the second season running. 1953 RAC Tourist Trophy
The 1953 RAC Tourist Trophy was a motor race for sports cars, held on 5 September 1953 at the Dundrod Circuit in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It was the sixth round of the 1953 World Sportscar Championship, held just six days after the previous round, the 1000km of Nürburgring. The race was the 20th running of the RAC Tourist Trophy. The race was won by Peter Collins and Pat Griffith, driving an Aston Martin DB3S. Background The race took place on Saturday 5 September, with Practice taking place on the Thursday and Friday before the race. The race distance was set at 111 laps with two drivers taking part for each entrant, with each driver being required to drive at least a third of the car's eventual distance in the event in order to be classified. Gordini T15S
The Gordini Type 15S is a sports car, designed, developed, and built by French manufacturer Gordini, in 1949. Development history and technology The Gordini Type 15S was developed when Amédée Gordini was still closely connected to Simca. The suffix S in the type designation meant sport and distinguished the sports car model from the monoposto Type 15. Although the 15S was built as a spider-like all other Gordini, the coupe variant is the only closed Gordini sports car. This type of racing car had different engines, but they were all based on the engine block of the Gordini 4-cylinder in-line engine. The displacement varied from 1.1 to 2.3 liters.
