Redhawk Publications
Redhawk Publications is a university press associated with Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, North Carolina. One of only three literary presses housed within a community college in the United States, its purpose is to publish and distribute artistic fiction and noteworthy non-fiction titles in addition to instructional textbooks and course materials from the region. Redhawk Publications' first book was the 2016 release ''Polio, Pitchforks, and Perseverance: How a North Carolina County Named Catawba Built a "Miracle"'' (which later inspired a documentary film named ''Miracle''). Since then, the press has released over 140 major works, including poetry compilations, history, non-fiction, children's books, memoirs, fiction and instructional materials. Redhawk Publications also co-sponsors the North Carolina Poetry Society's Lena Shull Book Award. Catawba Valley Community College
Catawba Valley Community College is a public community college in Hickory, North Carolina. The college, established April 3, 1958, is part of the North Carolina Community College System. The main campus covers and includes 16 buildings. The college also operates a Cosmetology Center in downtown Newton, the CVCC Alexander Center for Education in Taylorsville, and East Campus, where continuing education and business & industry services are provided. Specialty programs include the Manufacturing Solutions Center, where US manufacturers are provided assistance to increase sales, improve quality and improve efficiency. A Regional Simulated Hospital, ValleySim Hospital, opened in 2011. CVCC now has two furniture academies, one in Newton, North Carolina, and one in Taylorsville, North Carolina. Hickory, North Carolina
Hickory is a city located primarily in Catawba County, with formal boundaries extending into Burke and Caldwell counties. The city lies in the U.S. state of North Carolina. At the time of the 2020 census, Hickory's population was 43,490. Hickory is the principal city of the Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area, in which the metro population at the 2020 census was 365,276. Hickory is located approximately northwest of Charlotte, North Carolina. History The origin of Hickory's name stems from a tavern made of logs beneath a hickory tree during the 1850s. The spot was known as "Hickory Tavern." In 1870, Hickory Tavern was established as a town. Three years later in 1873, the name was changed to the Town of Hickory, and in 1889 to the City of Hickory. University Press
A university press is an academic publishing house specializing in monographs and scholarly journals. Most are nonprofit organizations and an integral component of a large research university. They publish work that has been reviewed by scholars in the field. They produce mainly academic works but also often have trade books for a lay audience. These trade books also get peer reviewed. Because scholarly books are mostly unprofitable, university presses may also publish textbooks and reference works, which tend to have larger audiences and sell more copies. Most university presses operate at a loss and are subsidized by their owners; others are required to break even.
