Recopa Intercontinental
The Intercontinental Champions' Supercup, commonly referred to as the Intercontinental Supercup or Recopa Intercontinental, was a football competition endorsed by UEFA and CONMEBOL, contested by the past winners of the Intercontinental Cup. The first Intercontinental Cup had been contested in 1960, resulting in a pool of 5 past champions (two from UEFA, three from CONMEBOL) available to contest for the first Intercontinental Supercup, in 1968. The pool increased to 6 past champions for the 1969 Intercontinental Supercup, but the two past champions from UEFA chose not to participate, resulting in the winner of the CONMEBOL preliminary round being declared the Supercup winner. Peñarol
Club Atlético Peñarol (), more commonly referred to as Peñarol, is a Uruguayan professional football club based in Montevideo. The club currently competes in the Uruguayan Primera División, the highest tier in Uruguayan football. The name of the club comes from the neighborhood on the outskirts of Montevideo, which itself takes its name from Pinerolo, a town in the metropolitan area of Turin, in the Italian region of Piedmont. The 1965 Intercontinental Cup was an association football tie held over two legs in September 1965 between the title holders of the 1964–65 European Cup Inter Milan and Independiente, winners of the 1965 Copa Libertadores, premier competitions in European and South American club football. This was a rematch of the contesters of the previous edition. The first leg was held on 8 September 1965 at San Siro, home of Inter, who won the match 3–0, with goals from Joaquín Peiró and Sandro Mazzola. The 1964 Intercontinental Cup was an association football tie in September 1964 between Independiente and Inter Milan. The first leg was held on 9 September 1964 in Avellaneda, and won 1–0 by Independiente. Two weeks later, Inter won the return leg, 2-0. 1963 Intercontinental Cup
The 1963 Intercontinental Cup was a two-legged football match contested between 1962–63 European Cup champions Milan and 1963 Copa Libertadores winners Santos. It was the fourth edition of the competition. The first leg was played at the San Siro in Milan, on 16 October 1963. Milan won the home game 4–2. The return leg was held the following month, on 14 November, at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro. As Santos won the match 4–2, the two teams were level on points. Therefore, a playoff had to be contested two days later, and Santos won 1–0, thus assuring the trophy. The 1962 Intercontinental Cup was a football tie held over two legs between Brazilian club Santos, winners of the 1962 Copa Libertadores, and Portuguese club Benfica, winners of the 1961–62 European Cup.
