Reconstructions — Architecture And Blackness In America
The Black Reconstruction Collective (BRC) is an American architecture collective. The BRC was formed by participants in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) ''Reconstructions: Architecture and Blackness in America'' project which was exhibited in the spring of 2021. History Formation The immediate origins sprung from a 2018 meeting between Sean Anderson, an MoMA curator, and Mabel O. Wilson, author of the essay ''White by Design from Among Others: Blackness at Moma'', from which resulted in MoMA curators asking the questions: “How can architecture address a user that has never been accurately defined? How do we construct blackness?”. Philip Johnson
Philip Cortelyou Johnson (July 8, 1906 – January 25, 2005) was an American architect best known for his works of modern and postmodern architecture. Among his best-known designs are his modernist Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut; the postmodern 550 Madison Avenue in New York, designed for AT&T; 190 South La Salle Street in Chicago; the Sculpture Garden of the Museum of Modern Art; and the Pre-Columbian Pavilion at Dumbarton Oaks. Interstate 81 (I-81) is a part of the Interstate Highway System that runs from I-40 at Dandridge, Tennessee, to the Thousand Islands Bridge at Wellesley Island in New York, beyond which the short Ontario Highway 137 (Highway 137) links it to Highway 401. In the US state of New York, I-81 extends from the Pennsylvania state line southeast of Binghamton to the Canadian border at Wellesley Island northwest of Alexandria Bay. ''Pin–Up'' (stylized as ''PIN-UP'') is a biannual independent architecture and design magazine based in New York City. The subtitle of the magazine is ''The Magazine for Architectural Entertainment'' and covers a range of highbrow and lowbrow topics in fashion, art, politics, architecture, and design. ''Pin-Up'' was founded in 2006 by architect, curator, and creative director Felix Burrichter. Burrichter currently serves as creative director of the publication, and Emmanuel Olunkwa serves as editor. History Burrichter launched the first issue in 2006, which featured a cover story on Rick Owens' house that displayed his furniture designs for the first time to the public. Black Reconstruction In America
''Black Reconstruction in America: An Essay Toward a History of the Part Which Black Folk Played in the Attempt to Reconstruct Democracy in America, 1860–1880'' is a history of the Reconstruction Era, Reconstruction era by W. E. B. Du Bois, first published in 1935. The book challenged the standard academic view of Reconstruction at the time, the Dunning School, which contended that the period was a failure and downplayed the contributions of African Americans. Du Bois instead emphasized the agency of Black people and Freedman, freed slaves during the American Civil War, Civil War and Reconstruction and framing the period as one that held promise for a worker-ruled democracy to replace a slavery-based plantation economy.
