Recoleta Cemetery, Asuncion
La Recoleta Cemetery () is a national cemetery located on the Avenue Mariscal López, Recoleta, Asunción, Paraguay. It contains the graves of important figures in the country's history, including presidents of Paraguay. The Cemetery is open to the public and has an area of about 14 hectares. History The cemetery is on the site of a Recollects, Franciscan Recollets convent, nationalised by José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia who had appointed himself head of the Paraguayan Church. Its origin dates from 20 October 1842 the date of its establishment by the government of Carlos Antonio López and consul Mariano Roque Alonso. Its creation was due to the lack of space for the burial of the deceased. Prior to this, remains were buried in churches or in the patios of houses. It was the first general public cemetery in the city and the country. Juan Gualberto González
Juan Gualberto González (July 12, 1851 – July 30, 1912) was the President of Paraguay and served from 1890 until his forced resignation in 1894. Life Juan Gualberto González was born in Asunción on July 12, 1851. He married with teacher Rosa Peña Guanez, daughter of Rosario Guanes and Manuel Pedro Peña. When the War of the Triple Alliance took place, he offered his services and joined the Health Department in the Army. He was taken prisoner, along with Juan Bautista Gill, and enlisted in the army of the allies. He returned to Asunción in 1869, two years later he joined the masonry, in the Paraguayan Union Lodge No. 30. After some time he became one of the founders of the Supreme Council Grade 33, this institution extolled him in this position on July 8, 1895, with Eleuterio Correo, Antonio Taboada (politician), Antonio Taboada and Cecilio Báez. Patricio Escobar
Patricio Escobar (March 17, 1843 – April 19, 1912) was President of Paraguay between November 25, 1886, and November 25, 1890. His life Escobar was born in San José de los Arroyos on March 17, 1843. His parents were José Escobar and Ana Bella Cáceres. He was first married with Ignacia Garcete, and later in his life with Estalación E. General Escobar was a hero in the War of Paraguay against the Triple Alliance. He was inducted as a private in the Cerro León mustering ground, later joining the Infantry Battalion No. 36. He was promoted to first officer in May 1866 and second lieutenant after the battle in Curupayty. He was adjutant of Marshal López in 1867 in the Headquarters of Paso Pucú. Adela And Celsa Speratti
Adela Speratti (1865–1902) and Celsa Speratti (1868–1938) were Paraguayan sisters who were instrumental in developing the educational system of the country. Born during the War of the Triple Alliance, in which their father was killed, the sisters and their mother became refugees, fleeing to Argentina. Both trained as teachers there before returning to Paraguay and establishing the first normal school in Asunción. Early life Adela Speratti was born in 1865 in Barrero Grande and Celsa was born in 1868 in Luque, Paraguay. Their mother, Dolores Speratti, was the daughter of José Miguel Speratti, natural son of Josefa Facunda Speratti. María Odulia Nicola Ruotti
María Odulia Nicola Ruotti, also known as Chinita de Nicola (5 September 1922 - 9 February 2006), was a singer and composer from Paraguay who was blind from a young age. Biography Ruotti was born in Asunción on 5 September 1922. Blind from a young age due to medical negligence, she did not let it be an obstacle to success. She won her first award from El Pais Radio aged 15; by the age of 17 was acting in radio plays. In 1944 she was awarded a scholarship by the government of General Higinio Morínigo which enabled her to study vocal performance in Buenos Aires. Career In 1948 she returned to Asunción and joined several musical ensembles, including that of Virgilio Centurión. In the 1950s she composed over one hundred popular songs, in writing partnerships with Cirilio R Zayas and Brugada Guanes. María Josefina Teodora Plá Guerra Galvany (9 November 1903 in Isla de Lobos, Canary Islands, Spain – 11 January 1999 in Asunción, Paraguay) was a Spanish-born Paraguayan poet, playwright, journalist, art critic, sculptor, ceramicist, and historian. Silvio Pettirossi Pereira (16 June, 1887 – 17 October, 1916) was a Paraguayan airplane pilot and aviation pioneer. Background Pettirossi was born in Asunción on 16 June, 1887 to Italian immigrant parents. As a young man he firstly moved to Spoleto in Italy where he attended a military school, then to Buenos Aires where he became acquainted with the aviator Jorge Newbery who taught him how to fly. Aviation achievements In 1912, Pettirossi received a scholarship from the Paraguayan government and moved to France where he obtained the title of aviator pilot from the international aeronautic federation. Marcelo Pecci
Marcelo Daniel Pecci Albertini (28 September 1976 – 10 May 2022) was a Paraguayan prosecutor. He prosecuted many high-profile criminal cases, involving Paraguayan and international drug cartels, as well as celebrities, including a 2020 case when Brazilian association football player Ronaldinho attempted to illegally enter Paraguay. Personal life On 30 April 2022, Pecci married Paraguayan journalist Claudia Aguilera Quintana. On the day of his death, she had told him that she was pregnant. Their son, Marcelo Daniel was born on September 30, 2022 four months after Pecci's murder.
