Martín Cárdenas (botanist)
Martín Cárdenas Hermosa (November 12, 1899 – February 14, 1973) was a Bolivian botanist. Cárdenas is considered one of the most important botanists in Bolivia's history. He is responsible for recording some 6,500 species of plants in his native country. Biography In 1918, he graduated as a Bachelor in Biological Sciences and Letters and secured a scholarship to continue his studies at the Instituto Normal Superior in La Paz, where he specialized in Biology and Chemistry. He graduated in 1922. On his vacations in Cochabamba he went for long walks by gathering plants, of which he soon recorded their characteristics in books and journals at the Municipal Library of La Paz. At that time, Cardenas had met Swedish botanist Erik Asplund, who had also shown a keen interest in studying the plants in Bolivia. Rebutia
''Rebutia'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Cactaceae, native to Bolivia and Argentina. They are generally small, colorful cacti, globular in form, which freely produce flowers that are relatively large in relation to the body. They have no distinctive ribs, but do have regularly arranged small tubercles. They are considered fairly easy to grow and they may produce large quantities of seeds that germinate freely around the parent plant. The limits of the genus are currently uncertain – in particular whether or not it includes species formerly or currently placed in the genera ''Aylostera'', ''Cintia'', ''Sulcorebutia'' and ''Weingartia''. The number of species included varies widely from source to source. A very large number of plants that have been treated in cultivation as species of ''Rebutia'' are now generally regarded as varieties, forms or synonyms of a much smaller number of species. History The Award of Garden Merit is a mark of quality awarded, since 1922, to garden plants (including trees, vegetables and decorative plants) by the United Kingdom, Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). Awards are made annually after plant trials intended to judge the plants' performance under UK growing conditions. Trials may last for one or more years, depending on the type of plant being analyzed, and may be performed at Royal Horticulture Society Garden in Wisley and other gardens or after observation of plants in specialist collections.
