Rebel Armed Forces
The Rebel Armed Forces (, FAR) was a Guatemalan guerrilla organization established in 1961 and lasting until the peace agreements in 1996. In the late 1960s, the Guatemalan government began a United States-backed counter-insurgency campaign that killed between 2,800 and 8000 FAR supporters in eastern Guatemala. The survivors of this campaign, which devastated the FAR, regrouped in Mexico City in the 1970s, and founded the Guerrilla Army of the Poor (EGP), which succeeded in mobilizing tremendous popular support over the next few years. FAR is most significantly known for having killed the U.S. ambassador to Guatemala, John Gordon Mein, in 1968. Also killed that year were two U.S. military advisers, Colonel John Webber and Ernest Munro, although they might have been killed at the command of PGT leader Leonardo Castillo Johnson. Guatemalan Civil War
The Guatemalan Civil War was fought from 1960 to 1996 between the government of Guatemala and various Left-wing politics, leftist rebel groups. The Guatemalan government forces committed Guatemalan genocide, genocide against the Maya population of Guatemala during the civil war and there were widespread human rights violations against civilians. The context of the struggle was based on longstanding issues over land distribution. Wealthy Guatemalans, mainly of White Latin Americans#Guatemala, European descent, and foreign companies like the American United Fruit Company had control over much of the land leading to conflicts with the rural, disproportionately indigenous, peasants who worked the land. Democratic elections in 1944 and 1951 which were during the Guatemalan Revolution had brought popular leftist governments to power, who sought to ameliorate working conditions and implement land distribution. Alberto Fuentes Mohr (born 22 November 1927 – assassinated 25 January 1979) was a Guatemalan economist and politician, one of the founders of the Social Democratic Party. He also served as Minister of Finance and foreign minister during the 1960s. John Gordon Mein
John Gordon Mein (September 10, 1913 – August 28, 1968) was an American diplomat who served as the United States ambassador to Guatemala. He was the first United States ambassador to be assassinated while serving in office. Early career John Gordon Mein was born on September 10, 1913, in Cadiz, Kentucky. He graduated from Georgetown College in Kentucky, and later went on to earn his LL.B. from George Washington University and some graduate work at American University. Mein joined the Foreign Service in 1942. He worked in Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Oslo, Jakarta, and Manila. In Manila, Mein was a counselor at the US Embassy, with the personal rank of Minister. He was also the one-time director of the Office of Southwest Pacific Affairs. From 1953 to 1954, Mein attended the National War College. The Guerrilla Army Of The Poor (, EGP) was a Guatemalan leftist guerrilla movement, which commanded significant support among indigenous Maya people during the Guatemalan Civil War.
