Rebecca Alty is a Canadian politician who has been Minister of Crown–Indigenous Relations since 2025. A member of the Liberal Party, Alty was elected to the House of Commons during the 2025 Canadian federal election and serves as the member of Parliament (MP) for Northwest Territories. Alty was the 15th mayor of Yellowknife from 2018 to 2025 and a city councillor for 2012 to 2018. Yellowknife City Councillors
Yellowknife is the capital, largest community, and the only city in the Northwest Territories, Canada. It is on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, about south of the Arctic Circle, on the west side of Yellowknife Bay near the outlet of the Yellowknife River. Yellowknife and its surrounding water bodies were named after a local Dene tribe, who were known as the "Copper Indians" or "Yellowknife Indians", today incorporated as the Yellowknives Dene First Nation. They traded tools made from copper deposits near the Arctic Coast. Modern Yellowknives members can be found in city and in the adjoining, primarily Indigenous communities of Ndilǫ and Dettah.
