Ray Vandeveer
Raymond Joseph Vandeveer (July 8, 1953 – May 11, 2024) was a Minnesota politician and member of the Minnesota Senate representing District 52, which included portions of Anoka and Washington counties in the northeastern Twin Cities metropolitan area. A Republican, he was first elected to the Senate in 2006, and was reelected in 2010. Before being elected to the Senate, Vandeveer was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, representing District 52A and, before the 2002 redistricting, the old District 51B. He was first elected to the House in a January 1998 special election after Representative Doug Swenson was appointed a district judge by Governor Arne Carlson. Arne Helge Carlson (born September 24, 1934) is an American politician who served from 1991 to 1999 as the 37th governor of Minnesota. Carlson is considered a liberal Republican. Before his governorship, he served as the Minnesota State Auditor from 1979 to 1991. Born into poverty in New York City, he attended the Choate Rosemary Hall preparatory school on a scholarship. After graduating from Williams College, he went to graduate school at the University of Minnesota. In his first race for elected office, Carlson was elected to the Minneapolis City Council in 1965 as a Republican. He served until 1967. Redistricting in the United States is the process of drawing electoral district boundaries. For the United States House of Representatives, and state legislatures, redistricting occurs after each ten-year census. The U.S. Constitution in Article 1, Section 2, Clause 3 provides for proportional representation in the House of Representatives.
