Ray Stokes
Raymond Gordon "Ray" Stokes (21 May 1924 – 26 February 2017) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was born in Longford. After making his debut for Richmond in the 1946 season, Stokes went on to play with the club for six years. He played in the midfield, as either a centreman or on the wing. Stokes had been recruited from Burnie in Tasmania and he returned there after leaving Richmond and became their coach. He represented the Tasmanian interstate side at the 1953 Adelaide and 1956 Perth carnivals. Stokes was also a cricketer and played first-class cricket for Tasmania. A left-handed batsman, he played nine first-class matches in total, scoring 323 runs at 24.84 with a highest score of 83. He was the older brother of Richmond footballer Jervis Stokes. Longford, Tasmania
Longford is a town in the northern midlands of Tasmania, Australia. It lies 145 m above sea level at the convergence of the Macquarie River (Tasmania), Macquarie River and the South Esk River, 21 km south of Launceston, Tasmania, Launceston and a 15-minute drive from the airport. Burnie Football Club
Burnie Dockers Football Club is an Australian rules football club in Burnie Tasmania, Australia. The club currently competes in the North West Football League (NWFL). Club history The Burnie Dockers were formed as a result of a merger between former TFL Statewide League club Burnie Hawks (formerly known as Cooee) and NTFL club the Burnie Tigers. After several years of bitter hatred in the city between the two rival clubs, both clubs were struggling both on-field and financially by the early 1990s. In late 1993 the Burnie Hawks absorbed the Burnie Tigers and merged, however the club still played as the Burnie Hawks until, with the arrival of former North Melbourne champion Peter German, the club adopted a new emblem, colours and jumper designed to appease both sides of the divide. Jervis Stokes
Jervis Arthur Stokes (21 September 1927 – 30 April 2016) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Early career Stokes, a centreman and half forward, played originally for Burnie. He represented Tasmania at the 1947 Hobart Carnival. Richmond In 1948, Stokes joined the Richmond Football Club, where his brother Ray played. It was his injured brother's spot that Jervis took to make his league debut in round seven, against Hawthorn. He made a total of 11 appearances that year, then eight in the 1949 VFL season, followed by 14 in 1950. Post VFL career Stokes went to Moorabbin as captain-coach in 1951, for the club's inaugural season in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). Moorabbin won only three of their 20 games in 1951, finishing only higher on the ladder than the other new club Box Hill. The Tasmania men's cricket team, nicknamed the Tigers, represents the Australian state of Tasmania in cricket. They compete annually in the Australian domestic senior men's cricket season, which consists of the first-class Sheffield Shield and the limited overs Marsh One-Day Cup. Tasmania played in the first first-class cricket match in Australia against Victoria in 1851, which they won by three wickets.
