Ray Apolskis
Raymond Edward Apolskis (October 19, 1919 – June 30, 1960) was a professional football player, an offensive lineman in the National Football League. He played eight seasons for the Chicago Cardinals and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. Born in Cicero, Illinois, Apolskis grew up in Chicago and graduated from Fenger High School, where he earned eleven varsity letters in football, basketball, baseball, and swimming. He played college football at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was a team captain as a sophomore. Apolskis was selected in the fifth round of the 1941 NFL Draft by the Cardinals, the 32nd overall pick. He started as a rookie in 1941, but missed the 1943 and 1944 seasons in the Marines. Center or Centre (C) is a position in gridiron football. The center is the innermost lineman of the offensive line on a football team's offense. The center is also the player who passes (or " snaps") the ball between his legs to the quarterback at the start of each play. 1947 Chicago Cardinals Season
The 1947 Chicago Cardinals season was the franchise's 28th season in the National Football League. The Cardinals won the second NFL championship in team history against the Philadelphia Eagles. The team was led by its " Million Dollar Backfield" of Elmer Angsman, Charley Trippi, Paul Christman, and Pat Harder. The Cardinals, however, wouldn't win another playoff game for an NFL record 51 years. As of the end of 2021, this is the team's last league championship. This championship drought is currently the longest active one in American professional sports. Until the 2018 season 71 years later, this and 1949 also marked the last time the Cardinals beat the Green Bay Packers on the road. 1944 Chicago Cardinals Season
Card-Pitt was the team created by the temporary merger of two National Football League (NFL) teams, the Chicago Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers, during the 1944 season. It was the second such merger for the Steelers, who had combined with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1943 to form the " Steagles". The arrangement was made necessary by the loss of numerous players to World War II military service, and was dissolved upon completion of the season. The war ended before the start of the 1945 season, and both teams resumed normal operations. Card-Pitt finished with a 0–10 record in the Western Division, which led sportswriters to derisively label the team the "Car-Pitts", or "carpets".
