Rausu Municipal Museum
opened in Rausu, Hokkaidō, Japan in 2011. The museum is housed in the former Uebetsu Elementary and Junior High School building. The display is organized in accordance with six main themes: archaeological materials relating to the Jōmon, Zoku-Jōmon, Okhotsk, , and Satsumon cultures; artefacts from the Matsunorikawa Hokugan Site (Okhotsk culture) that have been designated an Important Cultural Property; Rausu's luminous moss, a Prefectural Natural Monument; the Middle Ages and early modern period (the '' Wajin'' and Ainu, chashi, etc.); local industries and life, with an emphasis on fishing; and the wildlife of Shiretoko, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, including the white-tailed eagle, Blakiston's fish owl, and whales. Rausu, Hokkaido
is a town located in Nemuro Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. As of September 30, 2016, it has an estimated population of 5,395, and an area of 397.88 km2. The word "Rausu" originates from the Ainu word ''Raushi'', roughly meaning "Low-land" or "Place of men with beast-like spirit". The town occupies the southern half of the Shiretoko Peninsula. Kunashir Island, one of the four disputed Kuril Islands, can be seen from the town. Geography Rausu is located on the east end of Hokkaido's Shiretoko Peninsula. It is situated on the southeast corner of the peninsula facing the Nemuro Strait. The town stretches along and narrow strip of land, extending from southwest to northeast. The Shiretoko mountain range extends north on the peninsula to the sea where it forms steep cliffs. The Shiretoko mountain range is the source for myriad rivers, that all empty into the sea. Chashi
is the Japanese term for the hilltop fortifications of the Ainu. The word is of Ainu origin, from チャシ (''casi'', ), which means palisade or palisaded compound; a rival theory relates this to the Korean term 잣 (''cas'', ''jat'', ) of roughly the same meaning. Over 520 ''chashi'' have been identified in Hokkaidō, mostly in the eastern regions of the island; others are known from southern Sakhalin and the Kurils; similar phenomena such as the ''ostrogu'' of Kamchatka and the ''gorodische'' of northeast Asia may have developed independently. A few, including the Tōya ''casi'' of present-day Kushiro, date to the Muromachi period; the remainder date largely to the early seventeenth century. Blakiston's Fish Owl
Blakiston's fish owl (''Bubo blakistoni''), the largest living species of owl, is a fish owl, a sub-group of eagle-owls which specialize in hunting in riparian areas. It is native to China, Japan, and the Russian Far East. This species is a part of the family known as typical owls (Strigidae), which contains most species of owl. Blakiston's fish owl and three related species were previously placed in the genus ''Ketupa''; however, mtDNA cytochrome ''b'' sequence data is equivocal on which of the two genus names (''Ketupa'' or ''Bubo'') is more appropriately applied for this species. Its habitat is riparian forest with large, old trees for nest sites that is near lakes, rivers, springs, and shoals that do not freeze in winter.
