Smiltene Municipality
Smiltene Municipality () is a municipality in Vidzeme, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2009 by Merger (politics), merging the town of Smiltene with the rural parishes of Bilska Parish, Bilska, Blome Parish, Blome, Branti Parish, Branti, Grundzāle Parish, Grundzāle, Launkalne Parish, Launkalne, Palsmane Parish, Palsmane, Smiltene Parish, Smiltene and Variņi Parish, Variņi. During the Administrative divisions of Latvia, 2021 Latvian administrative reform, the previous municipality was merged with Ape Municipality and Rauna Municipality. The administrative centre is in the town of Smiltene. The population in 2020 was 11,985. It borders Estonia. Geography Smiltene Municipality is located in the northern part of the Vidzeme Highland on the banks of the river Abuls (Abula). Rauna Castle
Rauna Castle (, ) ruins are located in the village of Rauna in Rauna Parish, Smiltene Municipality, in the Vidzeme region of Latvia. The castle was the principal residence of the Archbishopric of Riga, and was visited each year by the Archbishop and his entourage. During the 16th century, it was greatly expanded and a settlement developed around the castle. It was first demolished in the 17th century, but the towers and parts of the castle still remain. History The first mention of Rauna Castle dates back to 1381, although historians agree that it may have been built here even earlier. Eighteenth-century sources mention the castle as being erected in 1262, following a proposal of Albert Suerbeer, Archbishop of Riga. It is noted that the castle was one of the most important centers of the archdiocese. The biggest reconstructions occurred under the reign of Archbishop Jasper Linde. Cēsis County
Cēsis county (, , ) was a historic county in the Swedish Livonia, in the Governorate of Livonia, and in the Republic of Latvia dissolved during the administrative territorial reform of the Latvian SSR in 1949. Its capital was Cēsis (''Wenden''). History First created as the Wenden Voivodeship in 1598, it was transformed into Kreis Wenden of Swedish Livonia in 1629. After the Treaty of Nystad it was incorporated in the Russian Empire and became one of the nine subdivisions of the Riga Viceroyalty ( – Stadtholdership of Riga) in 1783 and of the Governorate of Livonia in 1796.
