Raster-Noton Albums
Raster-Noton was a German electronic music record label. It was established in 1999 in Chemnitz, Germany. By the mid 2010s, it had become known as "one of Europe’s most revered and reliable hubs for experimental electronic music, IDM and audio-visual art." Raster-Noton emerged from the fusion of Rastermusik, founded by Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider in 1996, and Noton (''Archiv für Ton und Nichtton''), a sub-label that was run by Carsten Nicolai. The label focused on the overlapping border areas of pop, art, and science, releasing music albums, publications, and installation works focused on rhythmic, minimal electronic music. In 2017, the label split into two entities: Raster, to be run by Bender, and Noton, focusing on Nicolai's output. Carsten Nicolai
Carsten Nicolai (born 18 September 1965 in Karl-Marx-Stadt, now Chemnitz) is a German artist, musician and label owner. As a musician he is known under the pseudonym Alva Noto. Life and career Carsten Nicolai was born in Karl-Marx-Stadt (now Chemnitz) of Saxony, GDR in 1965. He studied architecture and landscape design before pursuing art. In 1994 he founded the label NOTON, following which a collaboration with RasterMusic began and by 1999 the two labels had merged into Raster-Noton, which operated until 2017. Returning to the labels origin in 2017, Nicolai runs NOTON separately. In 2009 Nicolai wrote the opera '' Sparkie: Cage and Beyond'' in collaboration with Michael Nyman. Atom™
Uwe H. Schmidt (born 27 August 1968), also known as Atom™, Atom Heart, or Señor Coconut, is a German composer, musician and producer of electronic music. He was active in the development of electrolatino, electrogospel, and aciton music. In the nineties, Schmidt moved to Chile and developed part of his career there, adopting the alias Señor Coconut. He began making music in the early 1980s, first playing drums, then switching to programming a drum computer after he had heard a Linn Drum on the radio. Richard Chartier (born March 29, 1971) is a sound/installation artist and graphic designer from the United States. He works in reductionist microsound electronic music, a form of extreme minimalism characterised by quiet and sparse sound. Early life and education Chartier was born in Arlington, Virginia, in 1971, and studied at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, from 1989 to 1993, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Cum Laude with a Concentration in Graphic Design and Painting. Franz Pomassl
Pomassl is an electronic sound and recording artist and DJ residing in Vienna, Austria, and is a co-founder of the Austrian Laton experimental techno label. Pomassl has inspired many other analog and digital electronic artists, including members of Pansonic and Carsten Nicolai, as well as collaborated with a number of important artists across disciplines, including Carl Michael von Hausswolff, J. G. Thirlwell and Kodwo Eshun. In addition to Laton, he has released with seminal electronic labels, such as Raster-Noton, Mille Plateaux, Ash International, Sex Tags Mania, Craft, Sabotage, and Nexsound. Pansonic
Pan Sonic was a Finnish electronic music group founded in Turku in 1993. The group consisted of Mika Vainio, Ilpo Väisänen, and Sami Salo. Salo left in 1996 leaving Pan Sonic a duo. The group was originally named Panasonic until 1998. In December 2009, it was announced that Pan Sonic would disband after their concerts that month. Their final album, ''Gravitoni'', was released by Blast First Petite in May 2010. ''Oksastus'', a live album recorded in 2009, was released in 2014. Music Pan Sonic cite their main influences from the early 1980s, with industrial acts like Throbbing Gristle, Einstürzende Neubauten and Suicide to reggae, hip-hop and dub. Vainio often remarks that their music is a merger of these two schools of music, taking the harsh and pure sounds typical of industrial techno and spacing them out into longer, subdued soundscapes familiar to instrumental reggae and dub. Andreas Tilliander
Berndt Andreas Tilliander (born 1977) is a Sweden, Swedish electronica, drone music, drone and techno producer who significantly contributed to the evolution of the glitch (music), 'clicks & cuts' genre with his first albums ''Cliphop'' (Raster.Noton) and ''Ljud'' (Mille Plateaux). He has recorded music under many names (Lowfour, Mokira, Rechord, TM404 and more) and worked with some of Europe's influential electronic music labels. Mark Fell (artist)
Mark Fell is a Rotherham-based music producer and artist. He has released several albums under his own name, with the duo SND he shares with Mat Steel, under the moniker Sensate Focus, and in various collaborations. He also maintains a sound art installation practice. Fell's work primarily explores the politics and ideologies of electronic dance music and experimental music culture, and is noted for its restrained and minimal style, which writer Dan Barrow described in The Wire as "fragments of dance genres . . . torn from their contexts and stripped down to their barest logic, each component probed and rearranged until it makes provisional sense". Kim Cascone
Kim Cascone (December 21, 1955) is an Italian American composer of electronic music who is known for his releases in the ambient, drone, industrial and electro-acoustic genre on his own record label, Silent Records. Biography In 1989 Cascone became an assistant music editor for director David Lynch on ''Twin Peaks'' and '' Wild At Heart''. Musically he has used various aliases over the years but became best known under the moniker Heavenly Music Corporation, a name taken from a track on the record ''(No Pussyfooting)'' by Brian Eno and Robert Fripp. Cascone released four full albums under this name from 1993 to 1996. Ilpo Väisänen (born 1963 in Kuopio) is a Finnish electronic musician. He is best known as a member of Pan Sonic. In addition to his real name, he has recorded under the aliases ''I-LP-O In Dub'', ''I-LP-ON'', ''Liima'' and ''Piiri''. Goem (pronounced ) is the electronic music project of Frans de Waard, Peter Duimelinks and Roel Meelkop. Active since 1996, it is one of the most internationally visible projects hailing from the Netherlands. They have about twenty CD and vinyl releases on various labels from Europe and North America. Emptyset
Emptyset is a Bristol-based production project, formed in 2005 by James Ginzburg and Paul Purgas. Ginzburg and Purgas say that by working across performance, installation and the moving image they are examining the physical properties of sound, the legacy of analogue media reflecting upon structural/materialist art production and the perceptual boundaries between noise and music. Emptyset has produced installations for Tate Britain and the Architecture Foundation in London, and presented live performances at Arnolfini, Spike Island Artspace, Kunsthalle Zürich, Sonic Acts XIV and Club transmediale (CTM) festival.
