Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar is a National Award instituted by the Government of India to recognize the contributions of outstanding researchers in the fields of science, technology and innovation. The award has been the subject of controversy because the final selection of awardees is conducted by a political official, the Ministry_of_Science_and_Technology_(India), Minister of Science and Technology, rather than a scientific committee. Background The institution of this award was announced in January 2024 and the names of the first set of awardees were announced on 7 August 2024. The awards were distributed on 22 August 2024, a day ahead of the National Space Day. The award consists of a certificate signed by the President of India and a medallion. Rohit Srivastava (scientist)
Rohit Srivastava (born 1976) is a Himanshu Patel Chair Professor in the Department of Biosciences and Bioegineering at IIT Bombay specialising in medical diagnostic devices, nanoengineered materials and photothermal cancer therapy. He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in Medical Sciences in the year 2021 for his contributions to the development of affordable medical devices. Rohit Srivastava heads the NanoBios Lab in the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering in IIT Bombay. The lab has developed and commercialised several products including UChek which is a mobile based portable urine analysis system, a low-cost reader for analyzing urine dip sticks, and Suchek which is an indigenous, low-cost glucometer. Roxy Koll
Roxy Mathew Koll is a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune. His research focuses on climate change and extreme weather events in the Indo-Pacific region, with significant contributions to understanding of Indian Ocean warming, monsoon dynamics, heatwaves, tropical cyclones and their impacts on public health. He was involved in writing the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate and the Sixth Assessment Report. Suman Chakraborty (born 8 August 1973) is a Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and Sir J. C. Bose National Fellow (bestowed by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India). The Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) is the chief advisor to the Government of India on matters related to scientific policy. It is currently a Cabinet Secretary level position created in 1999 by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. The first appointed Principal Scientific Adviser was A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. Suvrat Raju
Suvrat Raju is an Indian physicist. He is known for his work on black holes. He was awarded the 2019 ICTP Prize and the 2022 Nishina Asia award. Research Raju advanced a potential resolution of the black hole information paradox, which is based on the idea that "all the information inside a black hole can be recovered from outside" in quantum gravity. Mahesh Ramesh Kakde (born 1983) is a mathematician working in algebraic number theory. Biography Mahesh Kakde was born on 1983 in Akola, India.
