Rashid Abu Khawla
Rashid Abu Khawla (), also known as Ahmed al-Khbeil, is a Syrian rebel leader who is a former commander in the Syrian Democratic Forces and former Syrian Opposition leader based in Deir ez-Zor. Background Prior to the Syrian Civil War Khawla was reportedly involved in stealing motorcycles and was imprisoned for it by Syrian state authorities. As the war began he joined the Syrian Opposition in Deir ez-Zor and established his own militia which allegedly took part in running checkpoints that would extort and steal from drivers. Biography Prior to SDF In 2013 he and his group assisted the Syrian rebels in besieging the 113th Brigade of the Syrian army in Deir ez-Zor. In 2014 after the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) he pledged allegiance to the group. However he later left the group and fled to Turkey after ISIL executed his brother. The Free Syrian Army (FSA; ) is a Big tent, big-tent coalition of decentralized Syrian opposition (2011–2024), Syrian opposition rebel groups in the Syrian civil war founded on 29 July 2011 by Colonel Riad al-Asaad and six officers who defected from the Syrian Armed Forces. Liwa Thuwar Al-Raqqa
Liwa Thuwar al-Raqqa () was a rebel group in the Syrian Civil War. It was formed in September 2012 in the Raqqa Governorate. Aligned with jihadist factions for its first years, at the end of 2015, it joined the Syrian Democratic Forces. During an interview by Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi in 2015, Liwa Thuwar al-Raqqa's media director stated that the group wants a "civil society, civil democracy, democratic state". Liwa Owais Al-Qorani
The Owais al-Qorani Brigade (; Liwa Owais al-Qorani) is a Syrian rebel group from al-Thawrah that was formed in 2012 and revered the Islamic martyr Uwais al-Qarani. Originally part of the Free Syrian Army, the brigade later became a subordinate of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, only to be destroyed by ISIL in 2014 over disagreements. Saddam Omar al-Jamal (; born 1987) also known as Abu Ruqayya al-Ansari () is a Syrian jihadist militant of the Islamic State. He is known for taking part in the 2014 massacres of the Al-Shaitat tribe and for his involvement in the death of Jordanian fighter pilot Muath Al-Kasasbeh. Deir Ez-Zor Clashes (2023)
Starting on 27 August 2023, an escalation of violence occurred across Deir ez-Zor Governorate in eastern Syria. The clashes began after the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is the military force of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) arrested the military commander of Deir ez-Zor Military Council known by the name of Rashid Abu Khawla, Abu Khawla, accusing him of corruption and unlawful activity. Abu Khawla has the support of some Arab tribes in Deir Ez-Zor. The arrest led to a spiraling cycle of violence that escalated when tribal gunmen launched an offensive against the SDF in the region. AANES
The Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES), also known as Rojava, is a ''de facto'' autonomous region in northeastern Syria.
