Urban rail transit in India plays an important role in intracity transportation in the major cities which are highly populated. It consists of rapid transit, Regional Rapid Transit System, suburban rail, monorail, and tram systems. According to a report published in 2025, a total of 36.5 billion people traveled annually in metro systems across India's fifteen major cities, placing the country as one of the busiest urban rapid transit hubs in the world in terms of commuters. In 2025, the Delhi Metro alone carries an average of 46.3 lakh (4.63 million) passengers daily, and the Delhi-Meerut RRTS has an operational speed of 160 kmph according to Wikipedia. Monorail
A monorail is a Rail transport, railway in which the track consists of a single rail or beam. Colloquially, the term "monorail" is often used to describe any form of elevated rail or people mover. More accurately, the term refers to the style of Track (rail transport), track.The term "track" is used here for simplicity. Technically the monorail sits on or is suspended from a guideway containing a singular structure. Mumbai Monorail
The MMRDA Mumbai Monorail is a monorail line in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, built as part of a major expansion of public transport in Mumbai, public transport in the city. The project is operated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The monorail runs from Chembur in the city's eastern suburbs to Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk at Mahalaxmi in south Mumbai, effectively connecting the city's harbour line, central line and western line. Medium-capacity Rail System
A medium-capacity system (MCS), also known as light rapid transit or light metro, is a rail transport system with a capacity greater than light rail, but less than typical heavy-rail rapid transit. MCS trains are usually 1 to 4 cars. Most medium-capacity rail systems are automated or use light-rail type vehicles. Since ridership determines the scale of a rapid transit system, statistical modeling allows planners to size the rail system for the needs of the area. When the predicted ridership falls between the service requirements of a light rail and heavy-rail rapid transit or metro system, an MCS project is indicated. Srinagar Metro
The Srinagar Metro is a light rail transit planned for the city of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The plans for the Srinagar Metro have been finalised with the work expected to start once the project gets nod from union cabinet. The proposed network will have two corridors. Rapid Metro Gurgaon
Rapid Metro Gurgaon is a light metro system serving the city of Gurgaon, Haryana, India. Rapid Metro connects the commercial areas of Gurgaon, and acts as a feeder link to the Delhi Metro with an interchange with its Yellow Line (Delhi Metro), Yellow Line at Sikanderpur metro station. Built by Rapid Metro Gurgaon Limited (RMGL), the system was the world's first fully privately financed modern light metro system.
