''Raphitoma purpurea'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Raphitomidae. This species forms a complex with ''Raphitoma bourguignati'' (Locard, 1891), ''Raphitoma atropurpurea'' (Locard & Caziot, 1899), and ''Raphitoma digiulioi'' Pusateri & Giannuzzi Savelli, 2017. Description The length of the shell varies between 9 mm and 24 mm, its diameter between 4.9 mm and 9.5 mm. (Original description) The species shows a very rugose, fusiform and robust shell. It has a of a dark purple colour with sometimes a few spots or blotches of white. It contains nine or ten whorls, rounded, and tapering to an extremely fine, sharp apex. ''Raphitoma'' is a genus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Raphitomidae. The type species ''Pleurotoma hystrix'' Cristofori and Jan, 1832 is a nomen nudum. It has been validated by Bellardi, 1847 as “''Pleurotoma histrix'' Jan.” Distribution This genus occurs in European waters, in the northern part of the Mediterranean Sea, and in the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Verde, West Africa and Angola. Some sea marine gastropods have a soft tubular anterior extension of the mantle called a siphon through which water is drawn into the mantle cavity and over the gill and which serves as a chemoreceptor to locate food. Siphonal canals allow for active transport of water to sensory organs inside the shell. Organisms without siphonal canals in their shells rely on passive or diffuse transport or water into their shell. George Montagu (1753 – 20 June 1815) was an English army officer and naturalist. He was known for his pioneering ''Ornithological Dictionary'' of 1802, which for the first time accurately defined the status of Britain's birds.
