Raphael Thattil
Raphael Thattil () (born 21 April 1956) is an Indian prelate who serves as the List of major archbishops of the Syro-Malabar Church, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, the largest Eastern Catholic Churches, Eastern Catholic Church, and as the Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly, Metropolitan Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly since January 2024. Thattil was appointed and installed as the auxiliary bishop of Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy of Thrissur, Thrissur in 2010 to serve along with metropolitan archbishop Andrews Thazhath. In 2013, Pope Francis appointed him as the Apostolic visitor, apostolic visitator for all members of the Syro-Malabar Church in India outside their own territory. He served in these roles until he was appointed the first bishop of the newly erected Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Shamshabad, Eparchy of Shamshabad in 2017. Mar (title)
Mar ( ', written with a silent final yodh), also Mor in Western Syriac, is an Aramaic word meaning "lord, my lord". The corresponding feminine forms in Syriac are ''Mart'' and ''Mort'' for "my lady" (, '). A similar word Mar, meaning “lord,” is used in . These titles are used in Judaism and Syriac Christianity. In Christianity It is a title of reverence in Syriac Christianity, where the title is placed before the Christian name of saints, as in Mar Aprem / Mor Afrem for Ephrem the Syrian, and Mart / Mort Maryam for St Mary. It is given to all saints and is also used in instead of "Most Reverend", just before the name in religion taken by bishops. An example of the title ''mar'' being applied to a saint outside of the Assyrian tradition is found in Ethiopia where the Emperor of Ethiopia, Emperor Gelawdewos was bestowed with it after falling in battle during his decades long conflict with Muslim invaders.
