Oelegem
Oelegem is a village and ''deelgemeente'' (sub-municipality) of the municipality of Ranst in the province of Antwerp, Belgium. The village is located about east of the city of Antwerp. History Oelegem is located on the border of the Campine region with the loam area of the Nete. A Roman settlement was discovered dating between the 1st century BC and 3rd century AD. The village was first mentioned in 1161 when the parish became part of the Tongerlo Abbey. Around 1701, four fortresses were built by the French. During the 20th century, Oelegem was the site of the large scale constructions. Fort van Oelegem was built between 1909 and 1913, the Albert Canal was dug, and the motorway E313 from Antwerp to Liège was constructed. Vrieselhof Castle was completely destroyed during World War I, and later rebuilt in Flemish Renaissance Revival style. Broechem
Broechem is a part of the municipality of Ranst in Antwerp Province, Flemish Region, Belgium. The village is located on the highest point of the region. Toponymy The town's name is derived from the Old Dutch "broek" (wetland) and "heem" (house, building). The compound name "Broekhem" then transposed into "Broechem", the name it bears today. History The village was first mentioned as Polypticon in 868 or 869. The village was part of the abbey of Tongerlo. In 1542, the village was plundered and set on fire by the troops of Maarten van Rossum. Between 1909 and 1912, the Fortress of Broechem was constructed, and was the scene of heavy fighting in the Siege of Antwerp during World War I. Jozef Simons
Jozef Simons (21 May 1888, in Oelegem – 20 January 1948, in Turnhout) was a Flemish writer and poet. Jozef Simons was active in the socio-cultural life of the Campine, among other things as a President of the ''Association of Campine writers'' (1937–1948). Together with Felix Timmermans, Ernest Claes and the poet he was one the writers of the Belgian Campine during the interbellum. Jozef Simons was born in the Kerkstraat 18 in Oelegem as a son of Louis Simons and Maria Pauline Verheyen. After graduating in commercial sciences at the Institut Supérieur de Commerce Saint-Ignace in Antwerp, Simons became from 1909 up to 1923 house teacher of Count Brouchoven de Bergeyck in Beveren-Waas. During World War I, from 1916 and until 1919 he served as a soldier, first as a gunner, afterwards as interpreter for the British army. On 8 May 1920 he married Maria Engels, and lived in Schilde. The Arrondissement of Antwerp (; ) is one of the three administrative arrondissements in Antwerp Province, Belgium. It is both an administrative and a judicial arrondissement.
