Ranjith De Zoysa
Thirimadura Ranjith de Zoysa (3 May 1962 – 4 December 2019) was a Sri Lankan politician and member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka. He was a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna. He died on 4 December 2019 while receiving treatments at a hospital in Singapore for a cardiac condition. Early life Zoysa was born to a family of seven children from Elpitiya, Godakawela, on 3 May 1962. He obtained primary education from Siddhartha Vidyalaya in Elpitiya, secondary education from Rahula College in Elpitiya, and later studied agriculture in Aquinas University College. Political career In the late 1980s, motivated at the time by the radical political wave of the JVP, Zoysa entered politics. He was later elected chairman of Atakalampanna Pradeshiya Sabha in 1997 and appointed chairman of the same Pradeshiya Sabha as opposition leader in 2002. Joint Opposition (Sri Lanka)
The Joint Opposition (; ) was a political alliance formed by a faction of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) alongside several smaller quasi-left-wing parties of Sri Lanka. Between 2015 and 2019, it was the largest opposition group in the Parliament of Sri Lanka, and at its maximum extent the alliance had 52 MPs. The alliance was formed after the two major parties of Sri Lanka, the SLFP and the United National Party (UNP), formed a national unity government, leading to a great degree of discontent amongst many SLFP members (many of whom were loyal to former president Mahinda Rajapaksa), who then went on to form the Joint Opposition alongside other parties from the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA). Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council
The Sabaragamuwa Province (, , ) is one of the nine provinces of Sri Lanka. Ratnapura is the capital of the province. History The provinces of Sri Lanka were created by the British in the 19th century, but did not have any legal status until 1987 when the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka established provincial councils. The province is named after its former indigenous inhabitants, namely the Sabara, an Indic term for hunter-gatherer tribes, a term seldom used in ancient Sri Lanka. Ratnapura electoral district is one of the 22 multi-member electoral districts of Sri Lanka created by the 1978 Constitution of Sri Lanka. The district is conterminous with the administrative district of Ratnapura in the Sabaragamuwa province. The Aquinas College of Higher Studies also known as Aquinas University College is a Sri Lankan nonprofit private Tertiary education institute that provides both academic degrees and vocational training. History The Aquinas College of Higher Studies was founded in 1953 by Catholic priests Peter A. Pillai, the former rector of St. Joseph's College, and Thomas Cooray, the Archbishop of Colombo, as a Catholic university open to all ethnic and religious groups. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP; ; ) is a centre-left political party in Sri Lanka. Founded by S. W. R. D.
