Randoll Coate
Gilbert Randoll Coate (8 October 1909 – 2 December 2005) was a British diplomat, maze designer and "labyrinthologist". Early life The son of Charles Philip Coate, an expatriate businessman, Randoll Coate was born in Lausanne, Switzerland. After studying at the Collège de Lausanne he won a scholarship to Oriel College, Oxford, reading French and German. In 1940 he was commissioned into the Intelligence Corps, using his language abilities to interrogate prisoners of war in the "London Cage". He also took part in Operation Archery, a commando raid on port Vågsøy, Norway and helped support Greek resistance fighters in liberating Kalamata. Diplomatic career After the war, Coate joined the UK Foreign Office with diplomatic postings to Salonika, Oslo, Leopoldville, Rome, The Hague, Buenos Aires, Stockholm and finally Brussels at which point he took early retirement in 1967. Sir Randol Francis Fawkes (20 March 1924 – 15 June 2000) was a Bahamian politician, trade unionist and lawyer. He served as Member of Parliament for the St. Barnabas constituency and for a short time as a Cabinet Minister in the first Pindling government. Fawkes was knighted by the Queen in her 1977 Birthday Honours. 1967 General Election Fawkes is best remembered for the part he played in swinging the Bahamas' 1967 general election to bring about black "majority rule". In 1967, the Bahamas was a British colony ruled, despite its approximately 85% black population, by a white elite known as the Bay Street Boys. Alanson Merwin Randol (October 23, 1837 – May 7, 1887) was a career United States Army artillery officer and graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point (Class of 1860) who served in the American Civil War. He was promoted multiple times for gallant and meritorious service in battle, rising during the course of the war from the rank of second lieutenant to brevet brigadier general of volunteers. While Randol was a noted artillerist who served with the 1st U.S. Artillery in nearly every major land battle of the Eastern Theater of the Civil War, he also commanded the volunteer 2nd New York Cavalry Regiment in battle from December 1864 through April 1865, when he was present to witness General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House. George Randol (1895–1973) was an actor, screenwriter, director, and producer of films in the United States. In 1938 he was honored as an influential film executive in a newspaper writeup of the "Negro" film industry. Randol was born in Buena Vista, Virginia. Randol had numerous theatrical roles.
