Rancho San Lucas
Rancho San Lucas was a Mexican land grant in the Salinas Valley, in present-day Monterey County, California given in 1842 by Governor Juan B. Alvarado to Rafael Estrada. The grant extended along the west bank of the Salinas River south of present-day San Lucas. It remains an operating ranch. History José Rafael Estrada, son of José Raymundo Estrada and Josefa Maria Vallejo de Alvarado, received the grant of the San Lucas for two square leagues in 1842. Rafael Estrada was a half brother of Governor Juan Alvarado. Estrada sold Rancho San Lucas to James McKinley. Captain James McKinley, a Scottish sailor, arrived at Monterey in the 1820s and became a successful trader. In 1843, he was involved in a trading business partnership with Captain John Paty and Henry D. Fitch. He served as an agent for both Thomas O. Larkin and his half brother, Captain John B.R. Cooper. San Lucas, California
San Lucas (Spanish for "St. Luke") is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Monterey County, California, United States. It was founded in 1886 and named after the Rancho San Lucas, which was granted in 1842. The post office was first established in 1892. San Lucas is located in the Salinas Valley, on the Salinas River southeast of King City, at an elevation of . The population was 324 at the 2020 census, up from 269 in 2010. Rancho Tularcitos (Gomez)
Rancho Tularcitos was a Ranchos of California, Mexican land grant in present day Monterey County, California given in 1834 by Governor José Figueroa to Rafael Gómez. Tularcitos means "place of the little Tule thickets". The grant was in the upper Carmel Valley, along Tularcitos Creek, and was bounded on the west by Rancho Los Laureles. History Rafael Gómez (1784-1838), born in Mexico, came to California in 1830 as a legal advisor to Governor Manuel Victoria. In 1831, he married Josefa Antonia Estrada (1813-1890), a daughter of José Mariano Estrada, grantee of Rancho Buena Vista (Soberanes), Rancho Buena Vista. Rancho San Benito
Rancho San Benito was a Mexican land grant in the Salinas Valley, in present-day Monterey County, California given in 1842 by Governor Juan B. Alvarado to Francisco Garcia. The grant extended along the Salinas River south of Rancho San Bernardo. Present day San Lucas is within the boundaries of the grant. History Francisco Garcia received one and half square leagues, and built an adobe house. James Watson (1800-1863), born in Scotland, arrived by ship from the Sandwich Islands in Santa Barbara in 1824, and went to Monterey. He established a hide and tallow business, and married Mariana Escamilla (1805-1871) in 1830. In 1850, Garcia sold Rancho San Benito to James Watson. With the cession of California to the United States following the Mexican-American War, the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo provided that the land grants would be honored. Rancho San Bernardo was a Mexican land grant in present-day Monterey County, California given in 1841 by Governor Juan Alvarado to Mariano de Jesus Soberanes and Juan Soberanes. The grant extended along the west bank of the Salinas River. The grant encompassed present-day San Ardo. History The Soberanes family patriarch, José Maria Soberanes (1753-1803) accompanied the Portola expedition to San Francisco Bay in 1769.
