Rancho Cucamonga
Rancho Cucamonga was a Ranchos of California, Mexican land grant in present-day San Bernardino County, California, given in 1839 to the dedicated soldier, smuggler and politician Tiburcio Tapia by Mexican governor Juan Bautista Alvarado. The grant formed parts of present-day California cities Rancho Cucamonga, California, Rancho Cucamonga and Upland, California, Upland. It extended easterly from San Antonio Creek (San Bernardino County), San Antonio Creek to what is now Hermosa Avenue, and from today's Eighth Street to the mountains. Cucamonga Winery is an American winery originally located in Cucamonga, California. It was started by brothers Alfred and Eduardo Accomazzo in 1933. The winery is connected with the city's founding. A California Historical Landmark marker was placed at Cucamonga Winery in Cucamonga, California, marking the spot of historical Rancho Cucamonga. History The brothers came to the United States from San Desiderio in the Asti commune of Piedmont in northwest Italy in 1902. Tapia Adobe was the home of Tiburcio Tapia (1789–1845). Tiburcio Tapia was a Mexican soldier, politician, then became a merchant, winery owner and ranch owner, in what is now Cucamonga, California. The place of Tapia Adobe (home) was designated a California Historic Landmark (No.360) on October 9, 1939. John Rains House
The Casa de Rancho Cucamonga, commonly known as the John Rains House, is a historic house located at 8810 Hemlock St. in Rancho Cucamonga, California. (search for "8810 Hemlock St") The house was built in 1860–1861 after John Rains purchased the Rancho Cucamonga land grant in 1858 from the Tapia estate. The brick house featured its own cooling system, which used ducts to send creek water under the house. John Rains was a prominent businessman and socialite who opened California's first commercial winery, and his house hosted lavish parties for other local elites. Rains' fortunes soon took a turn for the worse, though; he had to mortgage the house after several business failings, and in 1862 he was murdered. Chinatown House
The Chinatown House is an historic building in Rancho Cucamonga, California. It is one of the last surviving examples of historic Chinese worker housing in the region. Built in 1919, the two-story brick building once housed 50 Chinese American laborers. It also served as a general store for the community. History The Chinese American population of the region first blossomed in the 1880s. A fire destroyed much of the community in 1919. The Chinatown House was built shortly after the fire. Structure The Chinatown House was built of unreinforced brick masonry, with 10 small rooms downstairs and two long rooms upstairs. George Chaffey
George Chaffey (28 January 1848 – 1 March 1932) was a Canadian engineer, inventor and entrepreneur who with his brother William developed large parts of Southern California, including what became the community of Etiwanda and the cities of Ontario, and Upland. They undertook similar developments in Australia, which became the city of Mildura, and the town of Renmark and Paringa. Biography Chaffey was born in Brockville, Canada West and attended Kingston Grammar School on Lake Ontario. Chaffey's family was of Scottish heritage. Although not interested in schoolroom instruction, he read engineering books from the local library. Chaffey left school at 13 years of age, was fascinated by the shipbuilding yard of his father, and became an apprentice marine engineer in May 1862.
