The following is a list of ''Coronation Street'' characters introduced in 2016, by order of first appearance. All characters are introduced by series producer Stuart Blackburn, or his successor Kate Oates. Marta Zarek Marta Zarek, played by Edyta Budnik, made her first on-screen appearance on 5 February 2016. The character and casting was announced on 29 January 2016. Marta is introduced as part of a modern slavery storyline. Mark Jefferies of the ''Daily Mirror'' reported that producers consulted experts to ensure the storyline would be accurate. A spokesperson commented, "Obviously, ''Coronation Street'' tries to tackle difficult subjects and has done storylines about serious illnesses and violence before. ''Coronation Street'' (colloquially referred to as ''Corrie'') is a British television soap opera created by ITV Granada, Granada Television and shown on ITV (TV network), ITV since 9 December 1960. The programme centres on a cobbled, terraced street in the fictional town of Weatherfield in Greater Manchester. The location was itself based on Salford, the hometown of the show's first screenwriter and creator, Tony Warren. Originally broadcast twice weekly, ''Coronation Street'' increased its runtime in later years, currently airing three 60-minute episodes per week. Warren developed the concept for the series, which was initially rejected by Granada's founder Sidney Bernstein, Baron Bernstein, Sidney Bernstein. Oliver Farnworth
Oliver Farnworth (born 5 August 1982) is an English actor. As well as appearing in various theatre productions, including West End theatre roles, Farnworth has also appeared as a regular character in two ITV1 soap operas: Andy Carver in ''Coronation Street'' (2014–2017) and John Sugden (Emmerdale), John Sugden in ''Emmerdale'' (2024–present). Sair Khan (born 11 February 1988) is an English actress, known for playing the role of Alya Nazir in the ITV soap opera ''Coronation Street'' since 2014. In 2018, she competed in the ITV reality series '' I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!''. Life and career Khan was born to Pakistani immigrants from Mirpur, Azad Kashmir in Leeds, West Yorkshire on 11 February 1988. She is of Pakistani descent.
