Ramdane Haïfi (1948 – February 24, 2007), also known as Ramdane Imazighen and Dda Ramdane, was an Algerian-French Berber nationalist activist. He was born in Ifnayen, Larbaâ Nath Irathen, and was instrumental in the establishment of the Berber Academy alongside Mohammed Arav Bessaoud Mohand Arav Bessaoud (born 24 December 1924 in Taguemount El Djedid, Algeria; died 1 January 2002 in Isle of Wight) was a Kabyle Algerian writer and activist. Larbaâ Nath Irathen
Larbaâ Nath Irathen ( Kabyle: Larebɛa n at Yiraten, or in Tifinagh, Arabic: الأربعاء ناث اراتين) is a town in Tizi Ouzou Province, in the central part of northern Algeria. It was formerly known as Fort National. The population in 2001 was 28,000. The area is renowned for its majestic scenery. Etymology * ''Larbaa'' means "Wednesday" in Arabic, the town's traditional souk day, or "four"/"fourth" in Kabyle * ''N'' means "of" * ''Ath Iraten'' means "sons of Irathen", the name of a major local tribe, recorded by Ibn Khaldun; ''Irathen'' may originally have meant "lions". History On May 25, 1857, the town was the site of a battle during the French Pacification of Algeria. French-aligned forces under Marshal Jacques Louis Randon defeated Kabyle defenders of the town as part of a campaign to curb Kabyle independence and bring them under the control of French Algeria. Berber Academy
''Académie Berbère d'Échange et de Recherches Culturels'', usually shortened to ''Académie Berbère'' or the Berber Academy was a Paris-based Kabyle cultural association formed in 1966 and officially authorized in March 1967 with the objective of raising Berber consciousness. The association was renamed Agraw Imazighen (English: Assembly of the Imazighen) in Tamazight in 1969. History Berber Academy is primarily associated with Algerian activist Mohand Arav Bessaoud, who formed the group with a small group of "Kabyle luminaries from the worlds of scholarships, arts, and politics," including Ramdane Haifi, Mouloud Mammeri, Mohand Saïd Hanouz, and singer Taos Amrouche, who hosted their first meeting in her home in Paris. Mohammed Arav Bessaoud
Mohand Arav Bessaoud (born 24 December 1924 in Taguemount El Djedid, Algeria; died 1 January 2002 in Isle of Wight) was a Kabyle Algerian writer and activist. He was described as the spiritual father of Berberism ("Dda Moh"), and a strong supporter of the Amazigh culture. Biography Mohand Arav was part, as soon as 1963, of the early movement that led to the rise of the National Liberation Front. He had published ''Happy The Martyrs Who Have Seen Nothing'' in 1963 in which he documented his war experience against the French. This book earned him the death penalty by the Ahmed Ben Bella administration. Kabyle People
The Kabyle people ( kab, Izwawen or ''Leqbayel'' or ''Iqbayliyen'', ) are a Berber ethnic group indigenous to Kabylia in the north of Algeria, spread across the Atlas Mountains, east of Algiers. They represent the largest Berber-speaking population of Algeria and the second largest in North Africa. Many of the Kabyles have emigrated from Algeria, influenced by factors such as the Algerian Civil War, cultural repression by the central Algerian government, and overall industrial decline. Their diaspora has resulted in Kabyle people living in numerous countries. Large populations of Kabyle people settled in France and, to a lesser extent, Canada (mainly Québec) and United States.
