Jayarama Valayden, most commonly known as Rama Valayden is a Mauritian lawyer, social worker and politician. Early life and education He was born in 1963 in Stanley (Rose Hill) Rama Valayden attended primary school Notre Dame des Victoires RCA. He then attended secondary school St. Andrews School in Rose Hill. In 1976 he formed the Sport and Literary Club of Hugnin Road. Family Rama Valayden is married to Taslima Valayden and together they had son, Rama Jr. Political career Just before the 1982 General Elections he launched a movement named ''Groupement Révolutionnaire Mauricien''. Rama Valayden launched a new party ''Mouvement Républicain'' in 1996 after distancing himself from the PMSD. Indentured Servitude
Indentured servitude is a form of labor in which a person is contracted to work without salary for a specific number of years. The contract called an " indenture", may be entered voluntarily for a prepaid lump sum, as payment for some good or service (e.g. travel), purported eventual compensation, or debt repayment. An indenture may also be imposed involuntarily as a judicial punishment. The practice has been compared to the similar institution of slavery, although there are differences. Historically, in an apprenticeship, an apprentice worked with no pay for a master tradesman to learn a trade. This was often for a fixed length of time, usually seven years or less. Apprenticeship was not the same as indentureship, although many apprentices were tricked into falling into debt and thus having to indenture themselves for years more to pay off such sums. Truth And Justice Commission
The Truth and Justice Commission of Mauritius was an independent Truth and reconciliation commission, truth commission established in 2009, which explored the impact of slavery and Indentured servant, indentured servitude in Mauritius. The Commission was tasked to investigate the dispossession of land, and “determine appropriate measures to be extended to descendants of slaves and indentured laborers.” It was “unique in that it [dealt] with socio-economic class abuses" and explored the possibility of reparations. The inclusion of Reparations (transitional justice), reparations, whether for individuals or communities, was a controversial decision within the country which aimed to correct inequality.
