Ralph Meyer Robey
Ralph Mayer Robey (8 January 1809 – 1 April 1864), often "Ralph Meyer Robey", was an English-born Australian politician and businessman. Robey was the son of William and Elizabeth Robey, and migrated to New South Wales in 1841. He ran a store and ironmongery in Sydney from 1843, and gradually expanded his business over the subsequent years. He was also involved in sugar growing and was one of the original shareholders of the Colonial Sugar Refining Company (CSR). He set up a sugar refinery in opposition to CSR at Oyster Cove ( Waverton), which failed when credit was curtailed under controversial circumstances. Financially embarrassed, Robey had to sell the enterprise to CSR at a loss, leading to dispute and litigation. He served on the Sydney City Council from 1846 to 1847 and was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1858 to 1861 and from 1861 to his death at Longton in Staffordshire in 1864. George Alfred Russell
George Alfred Russell (c. 1839 – 6 December 1926) was an Australian businessman involved in several business ventures, finally acting as Australian manager for the North British Insurance Company. History Russell was born at “Claremont” St Anne's Parish, Jamaica, on July 15, 1839, the posthumous younger son of Henry Russell (1811–1839) and Elizabeth Russell, née Cunnington (1810–1882). An obituary has G. A. Russell and H. E. Russell as sons of Edwin and Elizabeth Hough (died 7 July 1882), reinforced by the title of the book referenced below. Elizabeth Russell married Edwin Hough two years after her return from Jamaica after Henry Russell's death. He arrived in Sydney from London in 1859, first employed as shipping clerk for G. A. The ''Empire'' was a newspaper published in Sydney, New South Wales, in colonial Australia. It was published from 28 December 1850 to 14 February 1875, except for the period from 28 August 1858 to 23 May 1859, when publication was suspended. It was later absorbed by '' The Evening News''. History Henry Parkes founded the ''Empire'' and was its editor/proprietor until the business failed in August 1858. He made it "a newspaper destined to be the chief organ of mid-century liberalism and to serve as the rallying and reconciliation point for the sharpest radical and liberal minds of the day".
