Ralph Lancaster (lawyer)
Ralph Charles Lancaster (25 November 1907 – 28 August 1942) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Thomas Stanley Lancaster (1878-1960), the Town Clerk of Newtown and Chilwell, and Maud Amelia Lancaster (1878-1938), née Cory, Ralph Charles Lancaster was born in Numurkah on 25 November 1907. He married Jean Loveniah McCurdy (1912-1968), later Mrs Arnold Start Henderson, in 1938. Football Lancaster was recruited locally, from Geelong College. A rover, he kicked 20 goals in his debut season, and the following year was 19th. man in Geelong's 1930 VFL Grand Final loss to Collingwood. Military service During World War II, Lancaster served in New Guinea as a Gunner with the 9th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery, of the Royal Australian Artillery. Death He died of wounds sustained whilst on active service in New Guinea on 28 August 1942. He is buried at the Port Moresby (Bomana) War Cemetery. See also * ... Numurkah
Numurkah ( ) is a town in Victoria, Australia, located on the Goulburn Valley Highway, north of Shepparton, in the Shire of Moira. At the , Numurkah had a population of 4,768. History The area was occupied by the Yorta Yorta people prior to European settlement. Squatters moved into the area from NSW in the late 1830s. After the pastoral runs were made available for farm selection, the township of Numurkah was surveyed in 1875, the Post Office opening 2 November 1878. The local railway station was opened on the Goulburn Valley railway in 1881, but has not seen any passenger services since 1993 when the train to Cobram was withdrawn. The station building remains in private ownership, and a footbridge crosses the line. Numurkah became the headquarters of the Murray Valley Soldier Settlement Area - one of the largest soldier settlements in Australia - after World War I. Since the inception of the Victorian Football League in 1897, many of its players have served in the armed services, including the Anglo–Boer War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War (in which Melbourne's Geoff Collins served as a fighter pilot), and the Vietnam War (in which Essendon's Keith Gent, Lindsay McGie, and Ian Payne, and Geelong's Wayne Closter all served). A number of the VFL players who served also lost their lives on active service; they were either killed in action, or died as a consequence of the wounds, injuries, and/or illnesses they had suffered in their active service. Port Moresby (Bomana) Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery dating from World War II near Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The cemetery contains the graves of those who died in the fighting in the former Territory of Papua and on Bougainville Island. The remains of 3,824 Commonwealth soldiers, 699 of them unidentified are buried in the cemetery; as well two others: a Dutch citizen and one burial not related to the war. Over 600 Indian soldiers who fought in the Second World War are buried at the cemetery.
