Ralph Henry Bassett
Ralph Henry Bassett CMG CBE (16 February 1896 – 18 July 1962) was a British colonial civil servant in British Ceylon who served as Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Industries and Fisheries, Ceylon Government. Early life and education Bassett was born on 16 February 1896, the son of Rev H.J.Bassett, vicar of East Kirkby, Lincolnshire. He was educated at Haileybury College and University of Nottingham. He served with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry (1914–1919) during the European War and attained the rank of captain. Career Bassett joined the Colonial Administrative Service in 1920 as a cadet. The following year he went to Ceylon and served in various administrative and legal posts including Assistant Government Agent; Assistant Settlement Officer; Police Magistrate, Colombo, and Deputy Public Prosecutor. The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George is a British order of chivalry founded on 28 April 1818 by George, Prince of Wales (the future King George IV), while he was acting as prince regent for his father, King George III. It is named in honour of two military saints, Michael (archangel), Michael and Saint George, George. The Order of St Michael and St George was originally awarded to those holding commands or high position in the Mediterranean Sea, Mediterranean territories acquired in the Napoleonic Wars, and it was subsequently extended to holders of similar office or position in other territories of the British Empire.
