''Ralph and Betty'' was a 1947 Australian radio series starring Ralph Peterson and Georgie Sterling. Background The ''Adelaide Advertiser'' called it "a family serial which reproduces the everyday little incidents which make up the existence of a happily married couple. Ralph is no hero: he is no villain; he is just 'a funny little bloke in a big world.' Bettv his wife, does not suffer either the outrageous fortune or the mountainous successes of the usual radio serial character. Like her husband, she is a plain, ordinary, pretty housewife with a good fund of humor, and an over anxious concern for her husband. In short 'Ralph and Betty' arc very much like every young married couple. It is this quality that makes the serial one of the most appealing on radio." Ralph Peterson (writer)
Ralph Wilton Peterson (21 February 1921 – 2 November 1996) was an Australian writer (dramatist and playwright), actor and producer of film, theatre, radio and TV. He went to London and achieved fame with the success of his play '' The Square Ring'', which was turned into a film of the same name in 1953. He married the Australian actress Betty Lucas in 1946; their son, Joel Patterson (1957–2017), became a cinematographer. Biography Peterson was born in Adelaide, the only son of Ralph A. and Daphne (née Coulter) Peterson, and became involved in theatre and journalism in his teens. He got work on radio playing one of the students on the show '' Yes, What?'' (1937–41) which became very popular. Peterson started writing episodes. When the show ended Peterson moved to Sydney and worked as an announcer on 2UE before joining the army. He served as an artillery officer and in the First Australian Broadcasting Control Unit. The ''Kyogle Examiner'' was an English language newspaper, published from 1905 in Kyogle, New South Wales, Australia. History The first edition of the paper was published in December 1905. The paper was issued in twice weekly, Wednesday and Saturday editions, until 1971. After this time, the paper was issued weekly, until 1978. The paper was circulated throughout the Kyogle and Upper Richmond district, and early editions of the paper were issued with the subtitle "and Upper Richmond Advocate". The first proprietor of the paper was Ernest Lloyd Vincent, who owned the paper until 1935. In 1978, the paper was absorbed into the '' Richmond River Express Examiner'', which is now published as ''The Northern Star'', in Lismore, New South Wales. ''The Sun'' was an Australian afternoon tabloid newspaper, first published in Sydney under that name in 1910. History ''The Sunday Sun'' was first published on 5 April 1903. In 1910 Hugh Denison founded Sun Newspaper Ltd (later Sun Newspapers Ltd) and took over publication of the old and ailing ''Australian Star'' and its sister ''Sunday Sun'', appointing Monty Grover as editor-in-chief. The ''Star'' became ''The Sun'', and the ''Sunday Sun'' became ''The Sun: Sunday edition'' on 11 December 1910. According to the claim below the masthead of that issue, it had a "circulation larger than that of any other Sunday paper in Australia". Denison sold the business in 1925. Betty Helen Lucas (31 May 1924 – 7 April 2015), also known as Betty Lucas Peterson, was an Australian character actress and theatre director, known for her numerous roles on stage and television, starting from the post-WWII years in 1945. Early life Lucas was born in the Sydney suburb of Coogee, New South Wales to Walter Lucas and Marion Gibson. She trained with May Hollinworth at her Metropolitan Theatre. History The publication took its name from its founder and chief financer Sir James Joynton Smith, a prominent Sydney figure during World War One, conducting fund-raising and recruitment drives.
