''Rally Championship'' is a series of loosely related rally video games, focused on rally racing and based on what is now known as the Wales Rally GB. The series began in 1988 with Europress' ''Lombard RAC Rally'' game and ended in 2002. Each game in the series had many different front covers. Racing Game
Racing games are a video game genre in which the player participates in a racing competition. They may be based on anything from real-world racing leagues to fantastical settings. Lombard RAC Rally (video Game)
''Lombard RAC Rally'' is a 1988 rally video game developed by Red Rat Software and published by Mandarin Software (an imprint of Europress). The game was based on the same rally (under the earlier sponsors' names) as the later ''Network Q RAC Rally'' games, and was the first of a series of related games published by Europress. It was released for the Atari ST, Amiga and MS-DOS formats. The game prominently features an animated driver, seen from behind moving the steering wheel, with the road seen through the car's windscreen. The game cover art features Jimmy McRae's Ford Sierra RS Cosworth from 1987. Inspiration for the game came to Charles Partington and Harry Nadler (of RedRat Software) one lunch time when they were watching Lombard RAC Rally coverage on TV at the Top Cat Tavern (Manchester Corn Exchange/Hanging Ditch), which was located just around the corner from RedRat's offices. Wales Rally GB was the most recent iteration of the United Kingdom's premier international motor rally, which ran under various names since the first event held in 1932. It was consistently a round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar from the inaugural 1973 season until the rally's final running in 2019, and was also frequently included in the British Rally Championship. The first rallies in the 1930s were simply known as Royal Automobile Club (RAC) Rallies and did not necessarily require leaving England. In 1951 the club organised the first annual RAC International Rally of Great Britain to tour the island, and until the 53rd event in 1997 this was still commonly known as the RAC Rally. In 1998, amidst a restructuring of the club and its commercial activities, the event lost its RAC identity and became known as the Rally of Great Britain or Rally GB, with title sponsorship from the Government of Wales since 2003.
