Ralina Joseph
Ralina Joseph (born October 27, 1974) is an American academic. She is a professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Washington, examining representations of race, gender, and sexuality in popular media. Education Professor Joseph earned her B.A. in American Civilization from Brown University, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies from the University of California, San Diego. Career Joseph is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies, as well as the Department of American Ethnic Studies. In fall 2020, she was named the associate dean for diversity and student affairs with the graduate school at UW. Additionally, she is the director and co-founder of the Center for Communication, Difference, and Equity (CCDE). Ferdinand De Saussure
Ferdinand Mongin de Saussure (; ; 26 November 185722 February 1913) was a Swiss linguist, semiotician and philosopher. His ideas laid a foundation for many significant developments in both linguistics and semiotics in the 20th century. Respectability politics, or the politics of respectability, is a political strategy wherein members of a marginalized community will consciously abandon or punish controversial aspects of their cultural-political identity as a method of assimilating, achieving social mobility, and gaining the respect of the majority culture. As a sociological term, it is often pejorative, typically used in a manner critical of the ideology. The term "politics of respectability" was first coined by historian Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham in 1993. According to her, respectability "emphasize reform of individual behavior and attitudes both as a goal in itself and as a strategy for the reform of the entire structural system of American race relations."
