Rajkot–Somnath Line
The Rajkot–Somnath line is a railway line connecting Jetalsar and Veraval. It covers a distance of in Gujarat. History The initial section from Veraval to Junagadh was started in 1880 by Junagadh Railway and opened to traffic in 1888. The line between Rajkot to Jetalsar was started in 1880 by Rajkot–Jetalsar Railway and opened to traffic in 1890. Rajkot-Junagadh-Veraval section was merged with Saurashtra Railway in April 1948. Veraval
Veraval also known as Somnath is a municipality and the headquarters of Gir Somnath district in the Indian state of Gujarat. It is also known for the hub of fishing industries in India. Geography Veraval is located at . It has an average elevation of 0 metres (0 feet). History Veraval was founded in 13th or 14th century by Rao Veravalji Vadher, a Rajput. Present name is believed to be derived from its old name "Velakul" meaning Port City. Veraval was once a fortified port town of the royal family of Junagadh. It was a part of the Kingdom of Junagadh till 1947 when Junagadh was merged with India. The city still bears some remnants of the old Nawabi heritage, the Nawabi summer palace being among them. Saurashtra Railway came into being in April, 1948 with the amalgamation of state railways like Bhavnagar State Railway, Gondal Railway, Porbandar Railway, Jamnagar & Dwarka Railway, Morvi Railway, Dhrangadhra Railway, Okhamandal State Railway, Junagadh State Railway, Baria State Railway, Rajpipla Railway etc. Upon the independence of India and the merger of various princely states into the Union of India, it became necessary to merge various state railways owned by these princely states into one.
