Raja Ali Haji
Raja Ali Haji bin Raja Haji Ahmad (1808/9–1869/75) was a 19th-century Bugis-Malay historian, poet and scholar who wrote Tuhfat al-Nafis, ''Tuhfal al-Nafis''. He was elevated to the status of National Hero of Indonesia in 2004. Haji has been described as one of the most important Malay writers of the 19th century. Early life Raja Ali Haji was born in Selangor (although some sources stated that he was born in Penyengat) in 1808 or 1809, and was the son of Raja Ahmad, who was titled Engku Haji Tua after accomplishing the pilgrimage to Mecca. He was the grandson of Raja Ali Haji Fisabilillah (the brother of Raja Lumu, the first Sultan of Selangor). Fisabilillah was a scion of the Sultanate of Riau, royal house of Riau, who were descended from Bugis warriors who came to the region in the 18th century. Mahmud Muzaffar Shah
Mahmud Muzaffar Shah (b. c. 1823, Terengganu – d. July 1864, Pahang), was the third Sultan of Riau-Lingga Sultanate (archipelagoes south of Singapore), whose deposition cleared the way for Dutch colonial control. Mahmud was crowned sultan in 1834, and when the regency of his father, Sultan Muhammad II Muazzam Shah ended in 1841, he resolved to restore the power wielded by his predecessors. He had the tacit support of the east coast Malay states to the north and particularly of Sultan Omar Riayat Shah of Terengganu. ''Sjair Abdoel Moeloek'' (شَعِيْر عَبْدُالْمُلُوْك; Perfected Spelling: ''Syair Abdul Muluk'') is an 1847 '' syair'' (poem) credited variously to Raja Ali Haji or his sister Saleha. It tells of a woman who passes as a man to free her husband from the Sultan of Hindustan, who had captured him in an assault on their kingdom. The book, with its theme of gender disguise common to contemporary Javanese and Malay literature, has been read as repositioning the hierarchy of men and women as well as the nobility and servants.
