Rain Is Falling
"Rain Is Falling" is a song written and performed by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). It was track seven on the album ''Time'' (1981) and was released as the third single from the album in the US in 1982. As with many ELO songs written by Jeff Lynne, "Rain is Falling" uses rain as a metaphor for loss and sadness. ELO writer Barry Delve calls it "classic ELO – a beautifully sung evocative ballad with a gorgeous melody, and sound effects that perfectly conjure up the emptiness of a rainy day." Delve remarks that the third verse, starting with the lines "With their brand new time transporter/They'll think maybe I fought to get away", follows the album's time travel concept and may seem to have little to do with the rest of the song. Electric Light Orchestra
The Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) are an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1970 by multi-instrumentalists Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood and drummer Bev Bevan. Their music is characterised by a fusion of pop and classical arrangements with futuristic iconography. After Wood's departure in 1972, Lynne became the band's sole leader, arranging and producing every album while writing nearly all of their original material. During their first run from 1970 to 1986, Lynne and Bevan were the group's only consistent members. The group's name is a pun that references both electric light and "light orchestral music", a popular style featured in places such as the BBC Light Programme between the 1940s and 1960s. Origins The first two lines of this rhyme can be found in ''The Little Mother Goose'', published in the US in 1912. The melody is the same as " A Tisket, A Tasket" and has been associated with "What Are Little Boys Made Of?", which has a different melody. The earliest known audio recording of the song was made in 1939 in New York by anthropologist and folklorist Herbert Halpert and is held in the Library of Congress. Content Composition The album version of the song starts with a Baroque-style trumpet and string quartet fanfare – reminiscent of Jeremiah Clarke's "Prince of Denmark's March" (ca. 1700) — and then develops into a minimoog sequence before the song properly begins.
