Rahway River Bridge
The Rahway River Bridge is a rail bridge over the Rahway River, in Rahway, Union County, New Jersey, U.S., a few blocks north of Rahway station, on the Northeast Corridor (NEC). The arch bridge was built circa 1915 by the Pennsylvania Railroad at the time it was widening and elevating the tracks on a viaduct on its mainline through New Jersey, a project that had been initiated in 1901. The bridge carries the NEC and is located at MP 19.13 of the New York Division. It is used by Amtrak, including Northeast Regional and Keystone Service, and New Jersey Transit's Northeast Corridor Line and North Jersey Coast Line, which junction near Union Tower to the south. The bridge was documented by the Historic American Engineering Record in 1977. It is part of the unlisted Pennsylvania Railroad New York to Philadelphia Historic District (ID#4568), designated in 2002 by the New Jersey State Historic Preservation Office. Northeast Corridor
The Northeast Corridor (NEC) is an electrified railroad line in the Northeast megalopolis of the United States. Owned primarily by Amtrak, it runs from Boston through Providence, New Haven, Stamford, New York City, Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore to Washington, D.C. The NEC closely parallels Interstate 95 for most of its length, and is the busiest passenger rail line in the United States both by ridership and by service frequency as of 2013. The NEC carries more than 2,200 trains daily. The corridor is used by many Amtrak trains, including the high-speed Acela, intercity trains and several long-distance trains. Union Tower
Union Tower is a closed interlocking tower on the Pennsylvania Railroad's Northeast Corridor in Rahway, New Jersey. History Union Tower was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) to control the Perth Amboy and Woodbridge Railroad. Incidentally the PA&W was electrified by the PRR in 1935. For years this interlocking tower on the PRR had controlled trains on the NEC and the PA&W heading either to or from the New York and Long Branch Railroad in South Amboy, New Jersey. In 1968 when the Pennsy merged with the New York Central Railroad to form Penn Central, Union continued to control trains from the PA&W and NEC. In 1976 the government created railroad Conrail assumed operations from Penn Central. While Amtrak handled passenger trains on the NEC. Conrail did commuter and freight operations. Rahway River Parkway
The Rahway River Parkway is a Greenway (landscape), greenway of parkland along the banks the main stem Rahway River and its tributaries in Union County, New Jersey, United States. Created in the 1920s, it was one of the inaugural projects of the newly-created Union County Parks Commission. It was designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm, sons of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. The Rahway River Greenway plan expands on the original design. The Perth Amboy and Woodbridge Railroad was a railroad company in the state of New Jersey. It was incorporated in 1855, and completed its line between Rahway, New Jersey, Rahway and Perth Amboy, New Jersey, in 1864. The company became part of the Pennsylvania Railroad system and was merged into the United New Jersey Railroad and Canal Company in 1958. The Rahway River drainage basin encompasses approximately 41 square miles in Union, Essex, and Middlesex counties in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of New Jersey. The Rahway River consists of four separate branches that converge in Rahway, from whence it flows as a single waterway to its mouth at the Arthur Kill. The longest, or West Branch, courses for 24 miles from Verona. The East Branch rises in West Orange/ Montclair and joins the West Branch in Springfield, forming the main stem of the river. The South Branch, which originates in Woodbridge, and the Robinson's Branch, which begins in Scotch Plains, join the main stem in Rahway.
