Rahlfs 1219
Rahlfs 1219 (in the Alfred Rahlfs numbering of Septuagint manuscripts), also known as the Washington Manuscript of the Psalms (''Washington MS II'') and van Haelst 83 (in the Van Haelst catalogue numbers of Septuagint manuscripts), is a Greek Septuagint manuscript containing the text of Psalm 1:4-146:9a, 149:2b-151:6, plus the first 6 verses of the book of Odes. It is made of parchment which has survived in a fragmentary condition. Using the study of comparative writing styles (palaeography), it has been assigned to the 5th Century CE. At some point before the 10th century CE, the last few pages of the manuscript were replaced with those from another codex. The manuscript is one of the six biblical manuscripts purchased by industrialist Charles Lang Freer at the beginning of the 20th century, now housed at the Freer Gallery of Art in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Codex
The codex (: codices ) was the historical ancestor format of the modern book. Technically, the vast majority of modern books use the codex format of a stack of pages bound at one edge, along the side of the text. But the term ''codex'' is now reserved for older manuscript books, which mostly used sheets of vellum, parchment, or papyrus, rather than paper. By convention, the term is also used for any Aztec codex (although the earlier examples do not actually use the codex format), Maya codices and other pre-Columbian manuscripts. Library practices have led to many European manuscripts having "codex" as part of their usual name, as with the Codex Gigas, while most do not.
