Ragtime (yacht)
Ragtime (formerly known as Infidel) is a racing yacht designed by New Zealand naval architect John Spencer and built in 1963. The yacht is notable for her ultralight monohull design, which was unconventional at the time of her construction. Originally owned by Tom Clark, she was renamed Ragtime by a subsequent owner when she was sold to new owners in the United States and became widely recognized for her competitive performance in ocean racing. Racing history Ragtime's first major victory came in 1967 during the Keelboat Fleet Championship in New Zealand, where she defeated the well-known yacht Ranger. She became renowned during the 1973 Transpacific Yacht Race (Transpac) from Los Angeles to Honolulu, where she narrowly defeated the favored Windward Passage by four minutes and 31 seconds. John Spencer (boat Designer)
John Alfred Spencer (6 July 1931 – 4 March 1996) was a New Zealand boat designer. Biography Spencer was born in Melbourne and moved to Eketāhuna in 1933. He spent most of his life in New Zealand. In the 1950s, Spencer established a boatbuilding workshop on Bute Road in Browns Bay, New Zealand, Browns Bay, Auckland, where he pioneered construction techniques for lightweight flyer boats and yachts. He was a well-known designer of sailing boats of all sizes, including the Cherub (dinghy), Cherub, Javelin_dinghy_(Australasia), Javelin (NZ), Firebug (Dinghy), Firebug and Flying Ant classes of sailing dinghies. Patrick Farrah is an American former retail executive who is a co-founder of Home Depot. Patrick Farrah was born and raised in Southern California. Dropping out of junior college in the first year, in 1962 he took a job at National Lumber and Supply Company in the Los Angeles Area. As the company grew into a small chain, he worked his way up from stock boy to executive vice president and general manager of National Lumber and Supply.
