Raftsund Bridge
The Raftsund Bridge () is a two-lane cantilever road bridge in Hadsel Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The bridge carries the European route E10 highway and it crosses the Raftsundet strait between the islands of Austvågøya and Hinnøya. The bridge is long, the main span is , and the maximum clearance to the sea beneath the bridge is . The bridge has 4 spans. The Raftsund Bridge was opened on 6 November 1998, at a cost of . It was the last of the long bridges connecting the Vesterålen islands. It is part of the Lofast project, the road connecting the Lofoten islands to the mainland, which was completed in December 2007. European Route E10
European route E10 is the second shortest Class A road which is part of the International E-road network. It begins in Å, Norway, and ends in Luleå, Sweden. The road is about in length. The Norwegian part of the road is also named Kong Olav Vs vei (). The road follows the route Å – Leknes – Svolvær – Gullesfjordbotn – Bogen (Evenes) – Bjerkvik – Kiruna – Töre – Luleå. Most of the road is paved and two-lane, with the exception of some bridges between islands in Nordland. It has a speed limit in Sweden, and is usually 7–8 meters wide, enough to make encounters between heavy vehicles trouble-free. In Norway the road is much more twisting than in Sweden, and around 6–7,5 m wide usually with a speed limit of . Raftsundet
or is a strait in Nordland county, Norway. The long strait runs between the islands of Hinnøya and Austvågøya, mostly in Hadsel Municipality, but the southern end is in Vågan Municipality. The strait is crossed by the Raftsund Bridge near the northern mouth of the strait. The Trollfjorden is a small fjord that branches off the strait to the west and it is a well-known tourist attraction. Lofast
Lofoten Mainland Connection () or Lofast is a part of European route E10 that connects the Norwegian archipelago of Lofoten to the mainland, giving direct access to Lofoten from the surrounding municipalities. The construction of this road was started autumn 1993, and temporarily shut down in 1998, when the first part was finished. It started up again in 2003, and Lofast was officially opened December 1, 2007. Actually Lofast connects Lofoten with the older road network on Hinnøya which was already connected to the mainland. E10 from Lofoten to the mainland formerly went through the Vesterålen archipelago, with the Melbu–Fiskebøl Ferry. This road went through several towns with uneven speed limits. Lofast is a significantly shorter road connection across Hinnøya to the mainland that requires no ferry crossings and allows driving at relatively high speeds.
